Seagal and the Jiu Jitsu connection

HI everyone! First post. Just wanted to say this is a great website!

But I do want to know something. Being a big movie buff and a Seagal fan, would you consider the style he uses in his films to be more jiu jitsu oriented? I do realize he is a master of aikido bt the way. I was just wondering if his style emphasizes more brutaliity or what. IM sure lots of it have to do with being 'movie-fu' but, just wondering what yopu guys think, as I always have heard that ju jitsu was usually considered the more combat and 'self defense' style art.

Well, you were right he does do Aikido...the question comes in as to what kind. Aikido branches that are more similar to the aikijujutsu that it came from probably have a few more strikes and are more offensive than a lot of what the public has learned about it. Hopefully one of the Aikidoka on this board can shed some light on what style segal does and what that style entails.

Well Seagal is black belt in Aikido, kenjutsu, and has training in karate, judo and jujitsu, so Maybe he mixes all those styles in his movies.

In some of his more recent movies, you can see elements of some types of Kung Fu systems as well.

He does the aikido hand control's (ikkyo, nikkyo, sankyo etc) but when he uses them he usually does them until there hand or arm breaks lol.

Just to let you guys know...the director of Belly of the Beast is 'Tony" Ching Siu Tung, the action director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers. Thats why thats one a little out there!
