Yama-tsuki and Bassai

Recommended Posts

hi guys, I'm back with another bunkai question.

I was just wondering if anyone had any practical combat applications for the yama tsuki (mountain punch) technique and the low uchi uke that follow in bassai dai (passai) kata.

It just seems in my very humble opinion that punching simulataneously with boths fists high and low, is not conducive or particularly applicable

in the scrappy, close-in and hectic environment of an actual fight. Nor does the high block low punch bunaki I've heard

I've beeing going over it looking for a thrown or some other takedown in the movement but don't seem to be getting anywhere.

Any other bunkai for Bassai would be most appreciated as well and I think would make for a useful thread since the majority of us practise this kata in some form or another :karate:

Mind, body and fist. Its all a man truly needs.

In my interpretation, you are on the right track..

It is far easier to demonstrate than it is to explain though...

Anyway, one possible application comes if you think of the move in terms of wrestling/grappling/ tackling...

If you postion one arm across the chest and the other behind a knee, and then execute your turn out of it...it makes a very effective take doen...but as I said, it is very hard to explain without being able to show....

It is only one of many applications, though....

The "double punch" itself can be a throwing technique...it can be a reaching and grabbing technique, etc...

This video will clarify what TangSooGuy was trying to explain.

This video contains the bunkai of the Passai kata of Shorin-ryu karate. This kata is not so different than the Shotokan Bassai Dai kata. It also contains the combination yama zuki followed by a low uchi uke.

Simple your hitting the guy in the groin and face at the same time.

I find myself using this move a lot in saprring and usually it works pretty well espically vs younger or lower ranks.

Yet another application is you can be grabbing the persons inner leg and side of head. As you pull back you are lifting the leg and pushing the head working a throw on the guy.

But again Im a fan of the U punch and use it a lot.

We've used it as a black and an attack. In one application the top fist is blocking, and the bottom one is an attack. In the second application, the bottom one is blocking a kick, and the top is blocking.

That is the application we learn too, put in the scrappy, close in environment of a real fight I'm not convinced that it would work (especially considering how difficult it is to use standrad blocks in such times)

I'm leaning towards the wrestling body-lock application suggested by TSG, and in the video(thanks Gyte) although that takedown seemed a bit higher than the move is executed in the kata.

The take down on the video is indeed executed higher on the video than I would have done it, but that's the great thing about application from forms...

It can be applied in many different ways, including different levels, and still be effective.

just because something looks like a punch in a kata..it can always be used as a ppalm heel stricke, eye gouge, knifehand, etc.

i spearhand to the throat and nads would be brutal in although it appears as the double punch.
