ovine king
a kata/form is a sequence that allows you to practice how to move. earth is the asylum of the universe where the inmates have taken over.don't ask stupid questions and you won't get stupid answers. Cmon
would a 15 count drill be classed as a kata?
A. Orstrom
In laymans terms, a kata is a fight between you and a number of imaginary opponents. You have to do a number of blocks, attacks and turns as if there were several people attacking you. A number of moves is not necessarily a kata. ovine king
kinda..... i've never really differentiated between a japaneses kata, a chinese ying or an engish form/drill. to me, if it's a sequence of movements then it's teaching you how to move. earth is the asylum of the universe where the inmates have taken over.don't ask stupid questions and you won't get stupid answers. ovine king
i've never liked the thing about a kata being fight against imaginary opponents. i've always taken taht to be refering to your mentality when doing a form i.e don't play, take it seriously. why can't any sequence of drills be a kata? earth is the asylum of the universe where the inmates have taken over.don't ask stupid questions and you won't get stupid answers. ShotokanKid
I'd call kata prearranged forms with a name and specific techinques, stances, and kiai "What we do in life, echoes in eternity.""We must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men."

cathal
They show us not only a story behind the movements but also demonstrate commonly used fighting techniques. Practicing them frequently helps to develop muscle memory for them, thus helping you in real life situations. They also help to teach you endurance and proper application of power. .The best victory is when the opponent surrendersof its own accord before there are any actualhostilities...It is best to win without fighting.- Sun-tzu
parkerlineage
A parry is a move. An eyepoke is a move. A kick is a move. An elbow is a move. A move teaches you an automatic response. A technique is a flowing sequence of moves. A technique teaches you to link those responses together. A kata is a flowing sequecne of techniques that have similar applications or principles, whether they be obvious or subtle. A kata teaches you the similarity and reason to the techniques. In Kenpo.
