Aiko87 Posted March 20, 2005 Posted March 20, 2005 I know everyone has a favorite kata, but which katas do you feel are the best to be used in competitions? Or which kata do you use in competition? I usually use unsu or gojushiho sho. I'm interested to see what most people use.
cathal Posted March 20, 2005 Posted March 20, 2005 I think there was a similar thread a little while ago on this topic...can't remember it now but I have a bad memory anyway. Personally I've done well with Heian Godan, and Bassai Dai. .The best victory is when the opponent surrendersof its own accord before there are any actualhostilities...It is best to win without fighting.- Sun-tzu
Cheradenine Posted March 21, 2005 Posted March 21, 2005 Personally I've done well with Heian Godan, and Bassai Dai. Funny you should mention it.. I came second in a tournament using those 2 kata a couple of days ago!
DKizzle Posted March 22, 2005 Posted March 22, 2005 For Kenpo, I'd say Mass Attacks, even though I haven't learned it yet.

vertigo Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 A good question. Since I only know two, in my only tournament this year, I used Heian Nidan.. even though at the moment, my Heian Shodan is far better as far as my technique.Which brings me to a mini-question within this thread if anyone feels like answering it: If you're between two kata, should you perform the more technically challenging? or your better (but not by a whole lot) kata (even though it may be easier)? cathal Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 Go for the challenge! You know how you'll do with the other one, test your technique and just go for it. .The best victory is when the opponent surrendersof its own accord before there are any actualhostilities...It is best to win without fighting.- Sun-tzu
mindsedgeblade Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 What are the English translations of Heian Shodan, and Heian Nidan. And could you post a description of the forms? The names sound similar to two I learned as Pyong-an Cho-dan and Pyong-an Ei-dan.The translation I've heard for mine is "calm peace of mind" levels one, and two The best a man can hope foris, over the course of his lifetime,to change for the better.
cathal Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 We use "The Peaceful Way"Here are the diagrams:Heian Shodan:http://home7.swipnet.se/~w-72482/Heian%20Shodan.gifHeian Nidan:http://home7.swipnet.se/~w-72482/Heian%20Nidan.gif .The best victory is when the opponent surrendersof its own accord before there are any actualhostilities...It is best to win without fighting.- Sun-tzu
Kieran-Lilith Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 *looks rather shocked* You know, unless I'm much mistaken, Heian Shodan is our Pinan Shodan....go figure....*is confused now* He who gains a victory over other men is strong; but he who gains a victory over himself is all powerful Lao-tsu
