Tobias_Reece Posted February 8, 2002 Posted February 8, 2002 Hi all Ok, I'm gunna be really REALLY boring now and ask a terminology question. In Japanese MA, the body is split into 3 sections (basically) - Jodan (head height) Chudan (torso) and Gedan (lower). So if, someone says Chuden, they are attacking the midsection. However, I was watching Nishiuchi Shihan (who is an okinawan kobudo-ist), and he mentions something called dan-chu. He says dan-chu is exactly inbetween the nipples. Now, is Dan-chu the Okinawan term for Chudan, or are they two totally different things???? Help would be appriciated Thanks Tobias "You Are Never Given A Dream Without Also Being Given The Power To Make It True. chh Posted February 8, 2002 Posted February 8, 2002 From what I understand they're two different things. Danchu is specifically the point at the very center of the sternum, whereas like you said chudan just means generally mid-level. So I guess the danchu would be considered a chudan kyusho (sp?), a mid-level vital point.
SaiFightsMS Posted February 9, 2002 Posted February 9, 2002 From what I have seen Chh has it correct. Dan-chu refers to a very specific point - as in si-gitsu which is the solar plexus.
Tobias_Reece Posted February 9, 2002 Author Posted February 9, 2002 ahhhh......I know the Solax Plexus as Sugetsu as well. What about jin-chu - the philtrum (sp?) Do u call the philtrum jin-chu as well Thanks for the info "You Are Never Given A Dream Without Also Being Given The Power To Make It True. SaiFightsMS Posted February 9, 2002 Posted February 9, 2002 Yes those are some of the terms I have learned in class. Someplace I have a nice chart with the names on it. I was going to post a list of the terms only I can not find my list. :bawling:JI think it perished in the waterbed flood last month.
Joecooke007 Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 Dan chu is a specific point. It just uses those words because it is a very important section of the chest. Boards don't hit back. -Bruce Lee
SaiFightsMS Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 Yes and there have been some rare deaths in other sports when people have been hit in the chest in that area. I have a memory of kids in baseball being accidentally hit in the chest. Remember there is an inherant lethality in what we do. Many martial artists are conditioned to withstand impact that would really hurt an untrained person.
