One of my goals in life is to become a black belt. Ok, I want to earn it first of all. I am in my 30's and kind of dont want to take a style that would take me 20 years to get to be a master. I mean I hope to study for a long time. Ok what I am getting at is I know some styles have so much material it take years and years to master, while others are still good more to the point, maybe the process is longs. Maybe someone could point out some arts like this? I kind of was thinking of the Japanese arts inparticular.

Thanks. Any thoughts would be great.

If all you want is a black belt, but you want it fast...order one from the back of any martial arts magazine. This will not, however, automatically give you the knowledge and skills that a black belt represents.

If you want to learn and be proficent any martial art...it takes time and a whole lot of work. There are no shortcuts to being good at anything, and this is especailly true of the martial arts.

If your goal is to learn a quick form of self-defense...buy a gun.

Plan to study for a lifetime and you will reach all of your goals!

Don't pick an art based upon when you can get a black belt. Pick an art that you truely WANT to learn. If you like what you're training in, then the time factor will be meaningless. Time will go by quickly if you ENJOY what you're learning.

I think I understand your question here, but the others are right, there's no shortcuts. TKD and Kenpo should take about 4 years to get your 1st Degree Black Belt, which is a fair amount of time IMO.

Well I guess I asked this question just to find out how long it should take to get a black belt just to make sure I am learning and developing the right way in what ever style I pick. I guess also I did want to pick something I can really be dedicated right now get as far as I and not take forever, cause you never know what will come up (but I hope to study for a life time). Also this is probably my main reason, when I used to take shoto kan in college, we used to work out for 2 hours hard, then a few years ago, I went to a school to check it out, and the master warmed up the students the first half an hour, then just had the students to front stance across the floor and maybe put in a down block for the last half, that was it. A place like that, it probably take longer than usual to move up. So I get scared of being in a place like that, at least if I know the right pace, I can know I am in the right place.

if you fnd a crappy school, i'm sure you can get black belt as long as you shell out the dough. as well as a false since of security

I'm sure none of this is what you wanted to hear, Mtal. It is a good idea to pick one and to be very dedicated...if you truly want to be a master first examine why. Is it for prestige? Is it for power? Is it for the fact you want other karateka to look at you with awe? If so, then those are the wrong reasons, I'm afraid.

I do it so that I can live my life without being afraid of people. I do it to better myself mentally, spiritually, and of course, physically.

What do you consider the right reasons?

That is a reasonable goal of course. To me the right reasons could be different for everyone, but my primary reason would be for self improvement.
