elila Posted April 29, 2005 Posted April 29, 2005 I started with foam nunchakus; not terribly difficult, and even though I was being taught how to use them, I could still experiment and learn things on my own. They're cheap and don't hurt too much if you hit yourself. Are you certain they don't teach weapons at all? Or dohjang only has weapons classes on some Saturdays, but some people are surprised when they hear this because each student brings their equipment in and we don't practice every class. Maybe the Instructor has some experience with some weapons and you can get private lessons?
ShotokanKid Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 I dunno about learning yourself, you will accquire many bad habits, espcially with noone there to tell you if it's being done right or not.If you're just learning it for your own pleasure, it doesn't matter as long as you feel that it is powerful and effective. True, you won't learn the perfect way to hold the weapon, and it will be a bit clumsy against someone who knows what they're doing but if you just want to learn for fun, try books and making stuff up. It is true that you will develop habits that experienced people will think are bad, but you're doing it for fun right? "What we do in life, echoes in eternity.""We must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men."
fallen_milkman Posted May 17, 2005 Posted May 17, 2005 I'd say go for it and train yourself. It is true that you will develop habits that experienced people will think are bad, but you're doing it for fun right? If an experienced person notices a bad habit, all they will probably do is tell you why it's incorrect and tell you what is correct. That just fixes the problem. So I'd say meeting an experienced person who badmouths your skills could turn into a great thing. 36 styles of danger
