Did my first wrestling session today. It's twice a week, Greco-Roman and Freestyle. Mainly I got whooped by guys 40-50 pounds lighter than me. But that's okay, the only way to get good is to get beat. I think I did alright for never having wrestled before. Although every time we tied up, I kept thinking "knee, knee, knee!". Probably a bad idea.

 

We did a short jog for a warm up, then went into some basic drills. Pummeling, 2 on 1, underhook, some takedowns I don't remember the name of, two of them, then one called "shoot the moon" and one that was basically a one-arm shoulder throw only you drop to your knees. Then we wrestled. I had three matches, won once and lost twice, but I'll be honest and say I only won because I have a lot more power than the guys I wrestled against. Also did some slow rolling for technique with bigger guys. It was fun, I'm looking forward to doing it again. Every Tuesday and Thursday night until July. When I got home I cooled down with a drill of 50 pushups, 100 squats and 30 burpees in five minutes or under.

wrestling is a great base for just about all sports. as far as combat sports the most valuaable part is the takedown defences and the takedowns. it will also help you control people on the ground better.

 

byw it is takes alot of courage to swollow your pride and start something your not good at.

 

if you feel like a dork when you start, join the club, everybody does at first.

 

 

 

one last thing pushup and sit ups after a wrestling practice. are you nuts. ya got more heart than me. after a wrestling practice i ussally cant see strait

I can really feel with you. I was a REAL dork when I started my Wing Chun training. I was so much worse and unconcetrated than the others. I think I have got much better now.

Glad you liked it. I get really nostalgic about wrestling, since I use to do it all throughout highschool. I use to go back and visit the coach once every year or two, since I was good friends with him, but I haven't done it for awhile. Maybe I should try and find a wrestling club to join, except I'm already pretty busy with ma's.

It's good that you enjoyed your first practice!

 

Are you wrestling for high school, or what? Well, it is my sincere hope that you don't follow the nasty habit that most high school wrestlers do...seasonal anorexia. It's absolutely ridiculous! They do it to gain an "edge", but everybody does it, so there's no edge. If everyone would stop simultaneously, there would be healthy athletes with life-sized stomachs, but they're too stubborn for that I guess.

 

Oh, and may I ask what "burpees" are? Don't think I've ever heard of those before.

Yea, are you in HS ? If not it's real hard ot find a wrestling club..I sure wish there was one around me.

 

In my opinon wrestling is proabably the best base you can have.

 

Teach a wrestler submissions and he can be a terror on the ground because of his balance and takedown abilities.

 

Teach a wrestler to strike and he will be hard to take down.
