Is it possible to get to at least an intermediate level in using the nunchuku(SP?) with videos and books? I know how to do basic stuff from online videos.

I have been practicing Nunchaku from what I have seen in Bruce Lee movies. I may not be the best who wields it, but that doesnt mean I cant beat-up some bad-guys with style.

My personal opinion of learning from videos or books is that you won't get more than just a basic idea of the concepts or techniques involved in using weapons or open hands. If you already had a good, solid foundation in the weapon and wanted to suplement it with additional training, then perhaps a book or video would be beneficial...but otherwise, no.

As for learning good technique from Bruce Lee movies...I don't think so.

I don't think you can truly learn from a video or book.

Like Sensei said,If you have some knowledge and have trained with, with a teacher before, then books and videos can certainly suplement your training, but learning from scratch Is near impossible, and you wouldn't have anyone to correct you if you were doing it wrong. That would probably lead to lots of bad habits.

Hehe. I didnt say I was good. I just said that I could beat people with it, and do it in a stylish way.

But I think its better to start training with ignorance. By that I mean. If you wanna learn kung fu. Its better to learn it in a school from the bottom, than starting from a book and then go to a school afterwards. Well thats my opinion anyway.

I do know quite a few drills and strikes/blocks. I saw some kata at my dojo for the nunchuku and it really was no different from what I've been practicing except for it was all put together. I seem to have a natural ability for the nunchuku thanks to my drumming skills somehow. Is it at least possible to have books or videos teach me kata for the weapon?

I don't see much corrolation between drumming and nunchauku usage unless you're twirling them perhaps..which would be a huge no-no in my class.

I suppose you could learn a kata from a video or book, but you're not going to learn it correctly. There are subtle things in all kata that you just can't get from a book or video...you need a qualified instructor for that.

actually no, not even in twirling (personally, i'd stay away from the flashy twirly stuff in both arts, but that's another story).

as a drummer and a ssang jyel bang wielder, i can tell you that there's no correlation between the two, and i don't see a way that one would help out the other.
