ravenzoom Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 Hi everyone, my brother has just started boxing, and I've just begun practicing Judo. What I would like to know is first: In your opinion which style has more chances of having the upper hand in a fight between the two if they have the same physical attributes and abilities? (after achieving a good level of proficiency in both: black belt for Judo; and an experienced boxer) And two, which style is better for a street fight? I believe these two aspects are different when comparing styles. Maybe one is more effective against another style, but not necessarily more effective in a street fight, and maybe a style is better in both. I don't want to start any style bashing here, I just want some honest opinions about both styles in two different fighting scenarios.
Shorinryu Sensei Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 First of all, and I'm sure you understand this, there are no similarities at all between what judo and boxing do. Judo is a grappling martial art with few, if any strikes..whereas boxing is nothing but strikes. Judo's goal in a fight is to close with you and take/throw you to the ground and break something, or choke you out. Boxings goal is to punch you into submission. Two entirely different approaches. Now...it isn't possible to have two people that are of the exact same skill level at any given moment, but let's say two people that are close to it. If the boxer isn't aware the other person is a judo person and expects the judo person to stand upright and toss punches, then I'd say the boxer will be at a disadvantage because the judo guy will go for his legs and take the boxer to the ground where he has no skills to defend himself. On the other hand, if the judo guy doesn't know that the other guy is a boxer and the judo guy wants to stand upright and grab the boxer by the shirt and toss him...he might walk right into the boxers punches and not get close enough to accomplish his task. Now, if BOTH the boxer and the judo guy know about each other's skills...then I'd give the edge to the judo guy. he's going to dive below the boxers punches...maybe risk taking a few on the back of the head or shoulders, and the should be able to tie the boxer up in fairly quick order. My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!"
Cmon Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 I would say the judo. If the judop guy didn't know about the other one being a boxer i gues he would be able to tell by the boxer's stance. But deffinately the judo guy. But in a street fight with a random person i would say the boxer would have an advantage. But the judo wouldn't be at a disadvantage in a street fight from having done judo.
Venezolano Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 Judo guy by armlock or choke Valencia - Venezuela.
pineapple Posted March 12, 2005 Posted March 12, 2005 My opinion would be that the judo guy would win if the boxer didn't knock him out with the first couple of punches. Once the gap is closed, the boxer would be lost in the hands of a judo person. This is of course assuming that the boxer had no training in anything else. What works works
Chaz Posted March 14, 2005 Posted March 14, 2005 I'm pretty sure a boxer would demolish a Judo praticianer, if they were both experianced... Just from my experiances. I have friends in both... TJS Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 Beause of the nature of a fight it is easier to close distance and clinch than it is to keep distance and strike. That being said once they clinch the Judoka should be able to seccure a takedown. but there are diffrent types of boxers. Some would be easier to handle than other. If you get in there with a real puncher you may not get more than once chance got get a takedown.
Gumbi Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 I would say that a novice boxer stands a better chance against a novice judoka than does an experienced boxer against an experienced judoka.
pineapple Posted March 19, 2005 Posted March 19, 2005 I think that the answer to this is the same answer that has been given before....it depends on the individual! What works works
Gumbi Posted March 19, 2005 Posted March 19, 2005 Its been said before, so I'll say it again. To base all the merit on the individual is to ignore the distinct differences in styles. Boxing does not have techniques for takedown defense- you give me an olympic judoka and I'll put money down says he'll take down whichever boxer you put him with, assuming you dont put a featherweight with a heavyweight.
