hobz
So, I started training Muay Thai about a 4 months ago ago with a friend of mine. We both enjoy the fitness level, and were able to push ourselves to new levels. However, it's recently occured to me that he's quite lazy. Namely, I've been asking him if he was interested in coming more often with me to do Thai Pads and Technique work, and he just makes up lame excuses not to come. ie: Too Tired, Dad needs him at home, etc. What would you guys do in a situation like this? Would you look for a new training partner? There's a guy who trains at my dojo, the brother of the instructor, that I could train with. But he's got alot more power then I can handle at the moment, and I don't want to ask him to lighten up (it's his workout too right?). Think being able to take heavy teeps (front kicks) to the body is just something developed through taking them? Or would doing some core work help with this? He's a heavy weight, probably 200 pounds or so, I weigh in about 175. edit: run on sentence Rule #1: Play the game to the limit. Damn the consequences. kzshin
I think training with the instructor's brother, will strengthen you up better and faster than others, not to mentioned that you might be learn more some extra technics. If it's me I will definately train with this brother of instructor.
Topic
im only 125 - 130 and i sparr people with people over 200 pounds. This made me alot toughter, and im used to it now, i know what to expect, thats why wjhen i sparr somebody my own size its baby cakes for me haha, so it will definately be alot better for you to sparr somebody bigger than you, at the moment wen you sparr you will probably get hurt more than him becasue of the mass but just take the hits and keep going, thats what i did and it helpes. Mr Pockets
There's no harm in asking him to not hit you as hard as he can for a while, you need to build yourself up- and he'll still get good practice without wailing on you. You should try and workout with more than one person anyway.
SevenStar
pockets is right on both points. typically, when you spar, do drills, etc. you rotate partners - you aren't assigned to only have one for the rest of your training time at that school. by training with everyone, you are getting used to different people with different fighting styles and preferences. As for his power, ask him to lighten up. He'll still get a workout. Heck, change it up for him. Tell him to go lighter, but faster.
Mr Pockets
Not to mention that when you spar a guy so much better than you he ought to end up teaching you. And teaching is really the finaly step in learning something, so a smart guy won't pass up the opportunity.
