Sensei having health problems

Please say a prayer for him. Also, I need some advice. My favorite (and master) Sensei is out this week; on Sunday he fainted and spent the night in the hospital. :( He is home now, but not feeling any better, and apparently nobody knows what's wrong with him. I would like to know how serious it is, etc., but at class his wife doesn't seem to want to talk about it much. So far, everything I know has been gleaned from other classmates/substitute senseis; can anybody tell me how to tactfully inquire on his condition? So far I've just asked things like "Is Sensei feeling better?" And the only response I've gotten is "Not really." I got a "get well soon" card, but couldn't think of anything to write on it besides "get well soon!", which seemed kind of impersonal considering I've been faithfully attending classes for the past 4 years... we talk and etc. and I'd like to consider us friends. Actually, he seems like a sort of uncle to me. Anyways, any help will be appreciated!!!!

:( I'm so sorry to hear that, KarateChick06! I hope everything's okay with your sensei. As for the card, since you guys seem to be on friendlier terms, I don't think it would be a bad idea to write a little more on it.

You could start by telling him something about how you and the dojo hope for a quick recovery and that he return soon. Maybe you could also tell him that you consider him to be a special person and tell him a bit about what you've learned from him, not just technique-wise, but life lessons, if any.

I guess my main point is to let him know that he's had an effect on someone, and that he's appreciated and being worried about. Some carefully-placed humour might help lighten things a little as well.

I hope I've helped. If you'd like to chat a bit at all, pm me!

Thanks guys! I had total brain block when writing in his card. I ended up saying something like "The dojo's not the same without your twinkling eyes and cheerful smile. I miss you!" argh. At least yesterday evening his wife said he was feeling a little better; he'd gotten out of bed and eaten half a bowl of clam chowder. :) He might be back in the hospital today, though. :( More news tonight!

Sorry to hear about your sensei :(.. Hopefully he gets better soon; just keep your hopes up :)

And don't worry about what you wrote on your card, I'm terrible with that too... I'm sure your sensei appreciates it no matter what you wrote: it's the thought that counts.

He didn't go to the hospital, but he got tests back and they couldn't find anything, except that he was an elevated white blood cell count. :( I hope it's nothing, but it's probably serious.

I agree 100%! Very true, very true.

As for the whole elevated white blood cell count... to me it sounds like it could be leukemia. Let's pray it isn't. My thoughts are with you and your sensei and his family.

Your card turned out just fine. It was a good, short, encouraging messege. We all hope that your sensei will be okay. GOOD LUCK TO HIM!
