krunchyfrogg Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 I have ZERO experience in this style of the martial arts. My school is a karate one, with influences of Shotokan, Shorin Ryu, and Goju. My friend trains at this JJ school, it's in Harlem, NY. I'm going to it's open house next Saturday, and I'm really looking forward to it. If somebody could please tell me what to expect, I'd really appreciate it. AngryMatt Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 Expect to be mugged on the way since it's in Harlem. Oh, and then expect all ground work. Tons of submission holds and mostly working from your knees and guard. A little work from standing neutral, but only grappling takedowns. No strikes. "In the void is virtue, and no evil. Wisdom has existence, principle has existence, the Way has existence, spirit is nothingness."-The Book of the Void (A Book of Five Rings)"Men don't start fights, but they do finish them."
GhostlySykanRyu Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 That depends...what style(s) will instructors be covering? To condemn the art of another is to condemn your own as well. We all have the same origin.
krunchyfrogg Posted March 3, 2005 Author Posted March 3, 2005 I don't really know, JKD. I will ask my friend/coworker tomorrow. I'm really, really looking forward to this. One of my Senseis tells me that the biggest flaw in our style is that there is virtually know holds/grappling involved. This thing on Saturday should really improve me as a fighter. GhostlySykanRyu Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 I couldn't really tell you then. I don't know of any JJ styles withou holds/grappling... To condemn the art of another is to condemn your own as well. We all have the same origin.
krunchyfrogg Posted March 4, 2005 Author Posted March 4, 2005 I asked my friend yesterday what styles they were, but to be honest I can't remember what he said. I'll try to write them down when I get there tomorrow. I'm giddy at this opportunity! I've never participated in any other style before! krunchyfrogg Posted March 6, 2005 Author Posted March 6, 2005 OK, I had a great time! Learned quite a bit, but most of all, my eyes were opened to a whole new world yesterday! The styles taught there were called Sanucu Ryu, Kumite Ryu, and one other. I hope I didn't butcher the spellings. Wow, I'm still very impressed. Coming from a background of shotokan, shorin-ryu, and goju, The Sensei had to constantly tell me to relax my muscles. GhostlySykanRyu Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 I'm glad you enjoyed it. Not overly familiar with those styles. When I started training with my sensei I had to keep relaxation in mind as well. To condemn the art of another is to condemn your own as well. We all have the same origin.
