AngryMatt Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 A Warrior will fight to his death for his beliefs. A man will live for his.I really like that. Well said my friend. "In the void is virtue, and no evil. Wisdom has existence, principle has existence, the Way has existence, spirit is nothingness."-The Book of the Void (A Book of Five Rings)"Men don't start fights, but they do finish them."

MASIsshinryu Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 Warrior or not, by title, makes little difference. Live with honor, above all else. Base this on Courage, Justice and Obligation, and you will live a more powerful life. History is full of "Warriors" who lacked honor. "Tomorrow's battle is won during today's practice."M.A.S.
dippedappe Posted February 28, 2005 Author Posted February 28, 2005 I made this post to start an discussion on if we should or shouldnt, would or wouldnt react noble in a situation that called for a nobel action, if we could make a difference. If you(none in particular) would be brave(careless) and do the noble thing, or be careful(smart), and do nothing. Like, would you rush in and help a screaming old lady if she was attacked, or call the police and wait for them to take care of it. Or maybe just walk away, pretending that you didnt hear or see anything ect...Or maybe if you were in a bar late at night, and a gang made trouble. Would you try to stop them, or call the police and stay away from them. Would you stop a mafia member and testify against him ect...All the questions this topic holds. It was also my meaning to make this discussion "black and white", and then let it go into more "gray" areas. And I wrote it in a romantic way simply for the fun of it. Mind you that I dont think you are a coward only because you wont through yourself carelessly into the fray.
Chaz Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 I would say it depends on the siyuation your in...If there is something going on that should be stopped, such as the things sevenstar wrote, I would say it's almost our responsability as Martial Artists to stand up and say something. Once again, it depends on the situation, you don't want to be suicidal if you can help it... Kieran-Lilith Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 If I could make the tiniest difference to benefit everybody in some way, I sure hope I'd take the chance. If it was a system of self sacrifice for the "greater good", heck with that, I fight for myself. I'll fight to the end for my beliefs, for there will always be someone else to pick up where I left off is something should go wrong. I can't just lie down when I can see something very wrong, it's not in my nature. He who gains a victory over other men is strong; but he who gains a victory over himself is all powerful Lao-tsu
Kieran-Lilith Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 ::edit:: Sorry, double post. We really should be allowed to delete our own. He who gains a victory over other men is strong; but he who gains a victory over himself is all powerful Lao-tsu
ovine king Posted March 1, 2005 Posted March 1, 2005 a warrior is simply one who fights. i really don't like the use of the word of warrior here as it is used emotively and as such injects a personal response as opposed to an objective response. in that case, i'm not sure if it is even the right word to use as the good attributes you are applying to it aren't directly affiliated with it. wouldn't hero be a better word to use as one end of the spectrum? in any case, you said it yourself: "if we could make a difference" that depends purely on the individual and that is why i think hero is a better thing to think in terms of (as it is ,in a way, less cluttered with romantic martial arts associations). a hero, i would say, is someone who goes beyond the call of duty. if you know you are capable of resolving a situation with your skills and you walk away then you are doing wrong as a decent human being. if you intervene and prevail then you have done yourself proud (but you haven't gone beyond your ability). if you are not sure if you can do it and still march on in, then what you are is up for discussion..... earth is the asylum of the universe where the inmates have taken over.don't ask stupid questions and you won't get stupid answers.
