Nice post P&P. I tend to feel that there are two types of fighters offensive and defensive. Any true fighter will study their opponent and adjust accordingly. That does not mean that you will win but if you go into a fight mad then you already lost. I think people play mind tricks on themselves more than an opponent plays mind tricks on them. Just my 2 cents.

What the superior man seeks is in himself; what the small man seeks is in others. - Confucius

Sorry this topic is a little old, but I had to put in my 2 cent

Not sure if these are tricks but...

- With Int./Adv. they tend to notice patterns, if you switch up to something new after they've noticed a pattern it'll catch them by surprise. May not work with really adv. students- they're quick!

Example: I often throw one or two side kicks at a time because my long legs give me an advantage and keep the opponent farther away. When I was fighting a blue belt he noticed this and was easily predicting my moves and dodging them. I threw yet another side kick and then a quick reverse kick, backhand and punch. The sudden switch caught him off-guard.

Mr. Mike:

"I've found that in sparring, you can do only three things to win, attack, attack, attack. "

- Beginners tend to be thinking about when they can throw the next punch, when they can get the next move in. I know I did. My Master reminded us of this all the time.So here's a quick tip: don't forget defense! Sounds simple, but sometimes they forget that in light/no touch sparring you aren't taking much/any of a hit and so they forget to practice defense. I've helped out a few beg. who find it necessary to jump back twenty feet for a kick or ignore it because it's not a real fight and keep attacking. Huge reality check when they start real sparring an get the breath knocked out of them- or worse, caught in a real-life situation.
