Grenadier
A sempai / sensei / shihan should never be out to deliberately cause physical injury to one of the students. Even in cases where such sparring is done to teach a cocky student a lesson, the most you would see are just ordinary bruises. Whenever an instructor spars a student, there is always the possibility of physical injury, no matter what happens. For example, someone could be trying to anticipate a punch, and instead, dive into the fist with their now broken nose. Sometimes, an instructor will knock the wind out of you, to demonstrate that you were leaving your guard open, or perhaps will sweep / throw you if you aren't well balanced. Yes, broken bones can occur (although less likely, the better the teacher), and bruises, scrapes, cuts, etc., can also occur, but this is martial arts, not yoga. Under no circumstances should an instructor be out to deliberately cause injury, though. That is just plain malicious, and I look unfavorably upon instructors that do this on purpose. Ben Martin
Na my sensei is cool he only hits you as hard as you hit him. the only time he went for me and didnt use any controle was one time when he did a spinning backfist it was so quick that it only just missed and i was F**K. he then put his guard down and apoligised sand said he just wanted to show me the correct technique as i had done it twice in the round and hit his shoulder. if when any of us in my class hit the other extremely hard we always say ous and carry on or if u can see the person is dazed with touch gloves and then go back in. AnonymousOne
Have any of you had to face Sensei in a sparring match, or has he/she used you in demos, only to end up injuring you? If so, tell, tell! Many, many, many times I have had the honour of free sparring with a 10th Dan in Japan. He was 78 at the time and still incredible 7th Dan ChidokaiA true combat warrior has to be hard as nails in mind, body and soul. Warriors are action takers and not action fakers. Kieran-Lilith
I sparred Sensei. I learned something. Always keep your head guarded. I got hit in the head so many times I was dizzy and couldn't see straight and still had to try and fight. karatekid1975
A rule of thumb in martial arts is that you only get hit as hard as you hit weather your fighting your sensei or a sempai. So only hit as hard as you would like to be hit back. That's a matter of debate too. When sparring, you feel that you are not hitting hard, but to the other person it is hard. So he starts to hit back harder. So you take it up a knotch. It just continues to escalate. I see it happen all the time. And no one wants to be the one to say its getting too rough. They feel they would look like a whimp if they did. Thy don't want others talking about them and calling them sissy. The instructor, or assistant instructors, should be watching any contact drills or free sparring and managing it. Our instructor likes to spar, so often he doesn't monitor whats going on and people (especially kids) get hurt or injured. I agree with this. I sparred two people today, both high red belts. One was timid and I went easy on her. Nice lady, too. I am actually buddies with her. The other was a guy who is about to test for black. I have two more years of experience on him, and I know he traded shot for shot with my boyfriend (who is testing for black in April) a few times, so I went at him. We were trading some pretty good hits, no holding back. It was a good match. He put up a good fight, specially since I had more experience. I think my instructor was impressed with both of us It was a good class. Oh, I did spar a 3rd degree, too (one of the instructors from a sister school). He killed me LOL. But I didn't let up. He knows I spar hard (depending on my partner that is). He put a hurtin' on me but I'm not the type to back off even if I get my butt whooped. So, I basically spar how my partner spars. Like the first one. I knew she was timid, so I let up. But the other two were hard-hitting, and a lot of fun Laurie F

AnonymousOne
I have mentioned this story on this forum before. When I was a kyu grade in the early 1970's I had a shodan beat the crap out of me. He was very good and very mean. Big too I swore then to train hard and I did!!. To cut a long story short, I kept training and a little while later he left. 15 years later, he came back to start training again. Slydermv
My master has two visiting 4th Dan's from Korea in town, and lady and a man. I got to spar the guy one day.... was really excited, cause I always like sparing and getting the crap kicked outta me. (best way to learn how to defend yourself heh.) The match started and I think I caught him off guard cause I smoked him right away in the chest with a front leg turning kick.... it made a nice noise too... and I was sooo proud cause this guy is lightening fast and I'm only a lowly purple belt (Heh... it was like shooting a jump shot in MJ face.) Course... he smiled after this and proceed to pick me apart and kick the crap outta me. Nothing to hurt me.... but I never realized how many holes I had in my defences... cause everything I tried to do... he side stepped, backstepped countered and made me look like a chump... It was a humbling experiance, but I still tried to get pair up with him when ever I get the chance...
