Creating your own style.

Recommended Posts

Is there a skill limit on creating your own style?

Is there an age limit on creating your own style?

Is it better to create a style that forms around your personal skills?

I was not thinking of creating my own style, just pondering the thought.

Why would you create your own style... Are you a grandmaster in a MA? I think not.... If you fully understand a MA, maybe you can create your own style... but don't you think it will just be a mix of learned techniques from other styles... .

Yes I know that so you are saying that you have to be a Grandmaster?

You come across as having forcefull ways, you feel strongly about this subject.

What do any of you think about, ok not creating your own style but customising an existing one, look at this:

Mugen teshin Ninjitsu

Mishima style Karate

These are family names, incorporating the skills and weaknesses of the specific family.

ANYONE can create their own style, and with a certain amount of charisma pass it off as legit to a number of people. That doesn't mean that the style will be effective at all, or that it's creator is even a skilled martial artist. Anyone can claim anything...

However if you felt the need to create an actually useful MA style that differs from something not yet in existance, then a good thirty to forty years of MA experience would be a START...

To condemn the art of another is to condemn your own as well. We all have the same origin.

Taku,

My personal belief is that for now at least the world does not need a new style of martial arts. I believe that there are too many anyway. However to create a new style one has to have mastered at least one authentic style of MA (i.e. not John Smith style of karate).

Many modern MA "founders" believe that "studying" many styles automatically qualifies them as as serious martial artists and even new style creators. Mostly it doesn't. What it does make them is a JACK OF ALL TRADES AND MASTER OF NONE. It is best not to fall into this trap.

There is nothing wrong in studying a martial art and then adopting it to your own personality while keeping its essence. This is what the end result of kung fu and even karate studies is according to my own research, where what you have learnt is cutomized to the individual practitioner making the art more effective.

Also, to even create a family style such as you have mentioned you need to have mastered your art first.

Only time and commitment will make your Traditional "style" good and give you real knowledge.

"Marry" your chosen system as opposed to just flirting with it.

Make it your partner for life and you will see how well and how complete it really is.

I think this is always a touchy subject but i feel that everyone already has there own style especially when they have multiple arts and teach them together(multiple as in a few that you studied for several years not 66 that you studied for one class a piece). Now i'm NOT saying go out and proclaim yourself 25th dan founder soke of the grand ultimate ninja fighting style. Just saying that especiall when arts are mixed alot when your teaching them it might be best to use a new name but without inflated rank and with acknowledging where your style came from. Besides does it really matter what its called if it works?

I hate when people say that...most traditional guys are a jack of all trades as well. iron palm, weapons, hundreds of strikes, kicks, forms, qi/nei gong, chin na, shuai chiao.... you 're not gonna master ALL of them, but at the same time, you are familiar with them all. you are a jack of all trades, but within one style.
