Mook Jong / Wooden Dummy

Recommended Posts

Does anyone train with the Mook Jong / Wooden Dummy?

It's a part of my training in Jun Fan Gung Fu (Sijo Bruce Lee's modified Wing Chun). I also use it for much of my Filipino unarmed training (Panuntukan).

If so what do you use it for? Forms? Free play? Honing basics?

Yeah, I use wooden dummys.

I use it in moderation, So as to not get to stuck, or sticky. But I use it to train mostly trapping, and to really drill it in my mind to attack center line. And you can use it , in a boxer type way, learning to hit around arms, and doing it fast. And it makes you a more effective, tighter fighter. ( generaly speaking)

My brother and I were planning to build one since we didn't want to shell out the couple hundred bucks to buy one LOL. Any ideas or advice as to where I can find assistance or reference? I'm guessing that I need a nice log and um, I'm not sure what else. I used to lay a chair on its side and use the legs as arms, haha A wooden dummy is a great tool that suits the training of many practitioners regardless of style, not just wing chun or jkd etc.

Yo JKD Kid

Do you practice the Jun Fan Gung Fu dummy sets? If not then I'd recommend them as they give a bit of much needed structure to dummy work.

To have no form you must first have form. (One of the most misunderstood aspect of Jeet Kune Do - We are not "Anti-form")

As the man himself said....

"Expression is not developed through the practice of form, yet form is a part of expression. The greater (expression) is not found in the lesser (expression) but the lesser is found in the greater. Having "no form" then, does not mean having no "form". Having "no form" evolves from having form. "No form" is the higher, individual expression."

Hi Yoda

Hey those dummy plans sound nice. If you could somehow send them over in some shape or form that would be greatly appreciated, hehe:) I am no lumberjack but I'm sure that if I get a few brains together that we would be able to put together a decent wooden dummy. Hey you should make a book, it should be called 'The Dummie's Guide to Making the Wooden Dummy' *groan* sorry just had to let it out.

I have used a dummy before, but only for about 5-6 min at a Kung Fu dojo in northern Illinois, the master at the dojo showed me a leg sweep i could use on it. It was rather fun!!

Hey um on a side note I was just wondering out of pure ignorance, what is the importance that the specifications and measurements and placement of the hands (those things that stick out of the dummy) be measured and followed accurately in the blueprints? I received your mail Yoda thank you very much. Just wondering though, would it matter if I just found a big log and then stuck or hammered three smaller thingies into it as long as the height level is good and the thing is sturdy? I mean, an arm is an arm right. Of course what do I know, I don't know beans about the history and significance of the evolution of this training tool. I am not the best assembly handy andy guy. When I was little I experienced great frustration and anger with Tinkertoys :uhoh: :uhoh:
