dojo dilema...

Recommended Posts

As I'm sure a lot of you know, I'm going to be moving to Oregon very soon, and I've been looking for dojos and I found the one I want to go to. Northwest fight arts in Portland. My dilema is it looks like I'll be moving about an hour away in Salem/Dallas. Do you guys think it'd be worth it to travel an hour to a dojo 3-5 times a week? At this point I'm willing to do it, but I want to you yalls opinions.

I really don't know.. I guess the questions you have to ask yourself is : Is it worth it to me? Do you enjoy training more than you enjoy the money you save on gas to transit? Are you leaving a family behind, spending less time at home?

I guess all I'm saying is, weigh ALL the options carefully, and decide what is most important to you (depending on the cirumstances). Good luck with your decision. :)

An hour away?...So that means a 2 hour transit time...in addition to at least an hour long class? You are going to be dead tired not to mention the cost of the gas you are going to spend. Theres nothing similar in the area you will be located huh?

not sure how close Tualatin is to you, but worth a shot.

I drive 1.5 hours each way to my karate dojo, and about 35 minutes to my kendo dojo.

My karate classes are about 2.5 hours long...but to make it better (ie; less driving - working out time) you might want to see if there are kids classes before yours that you can help with.

I get to the dojo at 5:30 on tuesdays and thursdays and I leave sometime around 11, sometimes 10 sometimes 9:30 sometimes 11:30 it really just depends on when we finish...if class is going strong we dont stop till its late :)

Oh but keep in mind the added costs of doing that driving, gas, wear and tear on the car...the extra 2 hours each day (or more if you do the kids classes like I suggest) I dont know if your lifestyle allows for these sorts of things.

Anyway that's just my thoughts ;)

i looked at the class schedual and figured i go 3 times a week, and each class lasts between 2 and 3 hours. the only reason i'm going with this dojo is because, from what i've read and seen, this dojo rocks, it teaches everything i want to learn, stand up, take downs, ground work/grappling, weapons. now if only i could have the teacher and class move from portland to salem...

If you are going to get everything you want from it then go for it. It's better to do that then go to "Bobs Dojo" around the corner and not get what you want out of it!

yeah, but i just found out it costs $99 a month, i don't have that kind of money. so i can't go to this dojo... anyone know of any dojos teaching any kind of jujitsu or muay thai or traditional karate in or around salem?
