username237 Posted February 1, 2002 Posted February 1, 2002 just a quick question...do u think that students in a club deserve to be shown a higher level of respect based on their grade, their age or their sex? Has anyone ever had problems in their club, not being taken seriously by other students because of this?

If you have a little kid with an advanced belt who is a horrible asshole, than he will recieve no respect from me. I do have people like that at my school. I think that people should earn respect, they should not be given respect just because they have a colored belt on. Do unto others, as they done to you.

Second, in my school you will not receive a belt without respect. If you know techniques way beyond your class you will not receive a belt without showing respect. KickChick Posted February 1, 2002 Posted February 1, 2002 Humility is a quality of all serious TKD students. Although practicing TKD does boost self-confidence, this should not show a false sense of superiority to students especially if one has attained black belt. On the contrary, a good student should be humble and considerate. TKD practitioners have the highest regard for the morality and ethics of TKD... maybe in other styles which aren't as traditional, you will find this disregard. You get back what you give.... just remember that for the future!
SaiFightsMS Posted February 1, 2002 Posted February 1, 2002 This is an unfortunate but common problem. At it's best martial arts teaches respect. Unfortunately schools are not allways at their best. I think in many schools women students, where they are a definate minority of the enrollment, are at times treated a bit differently. Young higher ranking belts with attitude problems are many times also treated with less respect than their rank should entail. And then there are just days where it seems everyone in the dojo has an off day at the same time.
