taezee
i told someone recently of the old tradition....where if i got out of line or was not performing to standard..i was whipped with a bamboo stick..she could not understand it...it was part of the old tradition..part of the old training..something that was accepted at the time...i dont condone it now nor do i encourage it..but it was a part of my training at the time...a more traditional training..not to say taekwondo can be taught today without it..for it is necessary now to not do that..with all the abuse laws now and all..but i never held it against my master..and it was a kind of special attention given in my training to become a disciplined and well rounded martial artist.....recently he visited me and i got the old whipping for my mistakes..but i felt it wasnt degrading as she thought but a kind of a bond with my traditional training..almost an honor..unless you came up through the ranks like that you wouldnt understand...and i thank you baby for being so concerned about me ..but thats the way it was..and had made me a much better martial artist.although i dont do this with my students now..i remember my roots and my tradition..and realize..man they have it much easier now..but tradition sometimes doesent make sense only unto those who have lived it..i being a natural comedian got whupped on the most for making other students laugh during training..but i came out a much more tougher indvidual...soo that was then this is now...but i remember all the whuppings and the person i have become today...and alltough you may not understand it....that was my training...and i take constant whuppings today in every day life..but im tough..and i can take anything...physical or moreso mentally.its in my character..today i realize that the bamboo stick is nothing..compared to the abuse of everyday life can inflict on us..but i am strong....thank you for your concern.....but it was what it was..javi Javier l Rosario instructor taekwondo/hapkidounder master Atef s Himaya"whenever youre lazy enough not to train .someone, somewhere is training very hard to kick your *"
iamrushman
they also use the bamboo stick in zen meditation when you lose focus..........sometimes the old ways have purpose........."spare the rod and spoil the child".......i think it is a much better world with tradition and basics.......we need more of those attributes.......... rushman (karate forums sensei)3rd dan wtf/kukkiwon"saying nothing...sometimes says the most"--e. dickerson
SBN Doug
I agree, as long as the one holding the bamboo stick show control as well. I haven't had any big wuppin's, but I've had a few attention getters. Sometimes a good smack will teach you to keep your guard up better than being told 100 times. Joecooke007
I myself would love to train in this particular style. The bamboo stick will teach you better discipline while conditioning your body. Boards don't hit back. -Bruce Lee
hogwan
Hitting students in schools be it TKD or public education is a common punishment. At my school students are regulary hit for stepping out of line. That being said its not considered mistreatment....its just the way it is. Icetuete
when ur instructor has to show u what u can do better than he as well could just spar u once or twice instead of using a stick or something. it'll teach u things better than the stick and probably is even more painful
granmasterchen
i encourage different treatments, granted i truely respect the old school ways of the stick smacking, yet i never got it as bad as my instructors did, nor do my students get it as bad as i did, yet i think it is adequate to smack them in the head everytime they drop their guard, this will teach them not to drop their guard, others are just great for quick attention getters, yet if it is a student that causes too many problems and is disrupting the class anyway, i will give the individual some sparring "advise" about 20 years all rolled into one minute hahahahaha sorry, i am a cruel old man..... ps, i enjoy the stick training when doing balance exercises, it really strenghens the legs, plus if you are supposed to be tense and the muscles flexed then getting smacked is a sure way to tell if those muscles are ready for it, if they aren't you'll feel it all the more... That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger
tsdstud
We don't get that but once. Our master instructor did a seminar and he had my instructor and some of the other instructors come around to check on our stances. I'm not sure that I wouldn't mind that all too much now, but I know as a lower belt I would've. cho dan TSD"Every second that you are not training, someone somewhere is training to kick your butt"- Kyo Sa Lyle (my instructor) "Where we going in 5 months?!?!?!"
