Sanchin (Higashionna Kanryo) - Dan Levels

For the higher level kata, I just put "Dan Levels". These kata are not structured as to when they are to be taught. Each individual will move at a different pace through the learning process of these kata. Although, generally, by the time someone reaches about their 2nd year of Nidan or Sandan, they have learned all 13 kata and the associated bunkai and kakie. From then on, there are other kata that can be learned, but they are not from the Goju system and are not considered a part of the curriculum. This is just how my school does it, but there are several variations. I know several schools that teach Sanchin first, which is ideally correct because of what it teaches. Although, in today's society, I feel that one should have a good grasp of the basics, such as postures, proper breathing and muscular tension. I feel that there are several students who may learn the kata and then take it upon themselves to perform it incorrectly, or with incorrect posture and cause injury to themselves. Just thought I'd throw that in there.

I was wondering if somebody was going to name all of the Goju-ryu kata. We do things a little differently.

I had to learn:

Sanchin

Gekisai dai Ichi

Gekisai dai Ni

Seiyunchin

Saifa

Sanseiru

Shisochin for Shodan

Seipai for Nidan

For Sandan My teacher told me to pick one, as I am proficient in the rest of them. I'll be "testing" next month, after five years as Nidan. I chose Seisan because I think it's very short, but very sweet. :brow:

Ok you can check out the following 2 sites.

https://www.angelfire.com/wv2/wvka thats the way we do it.

each style may be differant but usually the Heian series is always done first in any shotokan style.

Sorry G95, but you're wrong here. My school uses a mainly Shotokan style, and we don't start the Heian Kata until our brown belt to red belt test (2 belts before black belt 1st dan). Up until then, we use Tae Kwan Do forms, which as most people here probably know, were Karate forms in the first place.

Anyway, the forms that I know the names of are as follows:

White to Yellow: Chon Ji

Yellow to Orange: Tan Gun

Orange to Blue: To San

Blue to Blue with White Stripe: Won Hyo

Blue/White to Green: Yul Kok

Green to Green/White: Chung Gun

We have a Purple belt and a Purple/White belt after that, then brown, red, red/black, then our black belt. I don't know those kata names yet. We also have 3 sparring combos and 3 one step sparring moves with each belt.
