I made my staff out of an old curtain rail...

Not sure about the wood but if by 'one ended' you mean tapered on one end (different styles 2 u, not sure if I'm right here) someone at my dojo suggested using a splice to taper mine when I said I was going to make one, didn't do this myself so I can't reccomend using wood you've bought specifically for making a staff.

I am not certain what you mean by 'single ended staff,' but at least I can answer your other two questions.

You can coat your bo with some boiled linseed oil, which should be available at almost any hobby shop. Make sure you used boiled linseed oil, and not regular linseed oil, since boiled linseed oil will cure in a reasonable time, while regular linseed oil will take forever to cure. Sand down the linseed oil coat a bit, if you have any rough spots, and apply a second coat. This will also give you a nice finish.

As for what kind of wood to use, you might want to take a look-see here:

For the best bang / buck, I'd recommend finding a slab of hickory wood. Get a tight-grained slab, and you won't be disappointed.

I carved a reasonable bokken out of a piece of spotted gum I found bushwalking.

So Id say that it can definantly be done.

Single ended staff refers to Dragon-pole (i assume,) and is commonly used in WingChun and other Kung-Fu.

Just look for the wax wood staff. Usually about 7' long, and tapers down to one end. If it's too long then cut down to size on the back end :brow:
