Eric-TKD Posted February 23, 2005 Author Posted February 23, 2005 Yeah I'm not sure what to think, and unfortunately it's going to be tough to work out a workable schedule with them, if in fact I do start attending classes. I definitely have a set of questions to ask them friday. Current Belt: Blue belt - 4th GupCurrent Hyung: Toi-Gye Hyung
Treebranch Posted February 23, 2005 Posted February 23, 2005 Quest is Stephen Hayes dojo I think. If it is he knows what he is doing. But I'd always check it out and see what you think. mattyj Posted February 23, 2005 Posted February 23, 2005 Actually it will be very weird at first, because TKD focuses on mainly kicking techniques. well i dont know about you, but in our tkd classes we actually do alot more hand work than foot work, and there are many many more hand techniques than kicking ones... and this being itf, eric tkd may have a similar experience, ive seen some ninjitsu joint locks etc and alot of our self defense techniques are along the same lines, but less complicated... having said this yes it still sounds like a dramatic change.
Eric-TKD Posted February 23, 2005 Author Posted February 23, 2005 Yes, while my dojang does its share of kicking drills and techniques, we also have quite a healthy arsenal of hand and throw/lock techniques. My experience seems quite similar to matt's. And yes, the Quest Center dojo is directly associated with Stephen Hayes, the chief instructor received his godan in Japan where he trained under Hayes and his sensei. Eric-TKD Posted March 3, 2005 Author Posted March 3, 2005 Well, the verdict is in. $115 a month + $35 belt fees = no thank you sir. GAAAAH!! The search continues...I fear there may be no better places to train than the one I'm at now. Current Belt: Blue belt - 4th GupCurrent Hyung: Toi-Gye Hyung
ravenzoom Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 I find those fees extremely high. My judo classes cost roughly $ 200 (Canadian! approx $140-150 US) for 4 months. And the wing chun classes I attended before cost me $300 (CA) for 6 months. So $115 for a month plus belt grading fees is extremely high.
SevenStar Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 how far are you from asheville? there is a very good kung fu school there.
Eric-TKD Posted March 4, 2005 Author Posted March 4, 2005 I'm afraid Asheville is too far away to be in any way convenient I've found another dojo, the instructor there is a nidan in shito-ryu style karate, and was also trained in submission fighting by Ken Shamrock...East Coast Submissions. Might check it out. That place is only $65 a month, I think I'll attempt a free class tonight. Current Belt: Blue belt - 4th GupCurrent Hyung: Toi-Gye Hyung
AngryMatt Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 I honestly feel bad for a lot of you guys. I get my training for free, donations accepted of course. But then again, I train in a squash room converted to a temporary dojo. Which happens to be worse digs than what my sensei trains in.... his teacher's basement. Now it's a fantastic basement of course, but it's not like we're doing this all legitimate as the law looks on businesses. That's why I like it. "In the void is virtue, and no evil. Wisdom has existence, principle has existence, the Way has existence, spirit is nothingness."-The Book of the Void (A Book of Five Rings)"Men don't start fights, but they do finish them."
Rank7 Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 prices are high. but taekwondo has given you a foundation. now buy your self a heavy bag . and train your self to deliver Quick and Powerful punches after you crouch , dodge evade as if you were in a real fight. same with kicks. what i did was sketch out a dummy with arms in boxing position . dont throw away your money or you mind.
