n3wt Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 Hi, I'm 18 and currently in college. I have always been interested in Martial Arts, but for various reasons never got started. I am now living on my own, and thinking of taking one or the other up. I live in a major city, so finding a place to go is no problem. Some that I have found that interest me are: Academy of European Medieval Martial Arts Which seems interesting, I think it would be kind of interesting to see what the europeans were doing in this field, as it seems that it has been overshadowed by various asian disciplines. The only thing I see wrong with this, is that they seem to do a lot of medieval weaponry and armour type things, which seems a little ridiculous to me, the training with the knife might be interesting though. Jeet Kune Do This one looks pretty cool, and I think the focus on street fighting might be interesting, though it seems to lack the history of the others, which some may think to be a good thing, but I find the history interesting. Wing Chun Kung Fu This is the one I am leaning towards, because I like the history, and from what I've read on their website, it seems that they are a really good place to learn. Northern Karate This organization seems pretty good, but for some reason I prefer Kung Fu to karate (at least, from the descriptions that I have read.) I am about 6'2" , and pretty slight of build, I have good reflexes and hand-eye coordination, but am not terribly flexible. I am not overly strong, but a few years on the farm have left me stronger than I look. I am looking for which would be best for me, and suggestions are welcome. (even if what you suggest isn't on the list above) We chased our pleasures here, dug our treasures there.
CloudDragon Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 You need to check them all out and go with your gut. If you want to learn self-defense, I would stay away from the weapons for now and look at the other places. A Black Belt is just a white belt that don't know when to quit!
pineapple Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 People on the forum can help you better if you tell them what your main goal in the martial arts is. What works works
Red J Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 People on the forum can help you better if you tell them what your main goal in the martial arts is. Well put. The first choice does not sound like what I would be looking for unless I could learn how to joust. J/K I would probably take a look at the last three. You can always visit and check it out and report your findings if you need any help. You may also want to see if your college offers something as many do at a substantial savings. I had to lose my mind to come to my senses.
vertigo Posted February 21, 2005 Posted February 21, 2005 You may also want to see if your college offers something as many do at a substantial savings. Good call, Red J. This is exactly what I do.. am involved with the shotokan karate club at my university... even though they also have Judo, TKD, etc.. You might be surprised how much your college can offer you. Good luck in your search. "Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go." - T. S. Eliot

1kickKO Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 What do you want out of martial arts? The discipline? To learn how to fight? For tournaments and competitions? The history? Let us in on these details and we can help you out in further detail. A few tips for finding a good dojo, is most instructors hav one free lesson, and if th ey don't, they allow you to watch. Call each one and find out if they have a free lesson and if not if they do let you watch, and if so go and take one lesson from each place, or go watch one lesson...it will come naturally to you which one you want to train in. Things to look for are the quality of the intructor, is he nice, is everybody else there nice, is the atmosphere a good place, etc..?
