dmdfromhamilton Posted February 24, 2005 Posted February 24, 2005 yes that one of the reasons why. also the association was called kuk sool won canada before it became the world dahn moo do association. and according to the national korean martial arts association which taught kuk sool won but then broke off to make kong shin bup the dahn moo do association owns the kuk sool won name in canada so thats why it was named the national korean martial arts association. And to make thngs even more confusing one of the first students of this asssociation is the second highest person in our org, and he holds and 8th degree bb in kong shin bup, as well as a 4th dan for his brief time in the world kuk sool won. Darkfeather Posted February 26, 2005 Posted February 26, 2005 I for one, take this Kuk-sul-Do. It is an ancient korean martial art where about only 5000 people in the world are taking it 1 grandmaster (my grandmaster) decided to revive this ancient martial art. It teaches very deadly punches and kicks and is not to be taken lightly. aside from that, my teacher does not just teach us how to punch and kick and stuff, he also teaches us how to treat others and self respect. He never encourages us to use it when we are at school and someone punches us or anything. that would get you in even more trouble. Only when you're on the street and you constantly ask the person to not fight, but they ill never give up, theres noone to call for help, or anything, then and only ten u can use it. alot of yu may think thats a wussie tactic, but look at you, now you look like just a big jerk! another thing that makes this art so different, is that we only get our promotion belts once or twice a year. We will only get promoted if everything is absolutely perfect.. there is no Jr black belt or anything, even if you're a kid, you have to do all 255 techniques perfectly, 50 roundhouse kicks in a row without stumbling, 100 pushups in 5 minutes, all forums perfectly (ive seen some people fail 6 times for blackbelt testing because of this) and tons of other rigorus tests. This is no fun time ride. telling others u can use kuk sul do on them if you make them look like crap... that is not good. even if you feel u must protect your title, you cant just beat the person down. .. i am only a bluebelt (6 promotions/12 before blackbelt) and ive taken such a likeing, im learning the language of korea. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v430/Dark_Feather/Redsig.jpg
champ64 Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 do a internet search on the hisory of the art and you find every thing u need to know about it's history
El Diablo Posted April 7, 2005 Posted April 7, 2005 Hello. I started with Grandmaster Yang back in 1984. He was a Master of Kuk Sul Won at the time. I trained with him for some time and my family moved away. I was able to climb to the rank of Brown belt. Many years later our paths crossed again. This time he was using the name of Kuk Sul Do. There is a lot of politics involved. Basically, some people in KSW were getting promoted because it was "good business". Grand Master Yang and several other masters from Korea broke away and formed Kuk Sul Do. It is very difficult to earn a black belt from Grandmaster Yang. You don't earn it, you need to "take it from him". Also FYI if you ever trained with GM Yang back in the day--you know how hard he pushes people. GM Yang has over 45yrs experience in the martial arts. I give GM Yang much respect. However, I to have moved on like others before me. I train for knowlegde of selfdefense. I have worked with several shoot fighters, UFC guys and BJJ guys. I am currently training in BJJ. I am trying to create a well rounded art. I have been in the martial arts for only 21yrs and I am still learning. I teach my brothers, my son and those who have the desire to learn. I do not teach just to make a buck. This is where too many schools get lost in "commercial" martial arts.
taiji fajin Posted April 7, 2005 Posted April 7, 2005 While I'm not sure all the grandmasters and masters of the different arts (kuk sool won, kuk sool do, hapkido, kuk sool won canada, etc) would like it, I think a book detailing all of these break offs and merges / near merges would be very interesting. Fetch Daddy's blue fright wig! I must be handsome when I unleash my rage.
