krzychicano Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 Everything has an opposite side to it. There are a million reasons why you should take something because you love it and not everybody that takes MA has the thought process of using it for self defense some people just enjoy the workout. Some people take it for the art alone and not for the reason of ever using it. Most people that are experiencing major pain with the knees or whatever would probably not say they love it anyways. We could go round and round over this but the simple fact is that the question asked is that if you enjoy doing something does it matter what the style is and the answer is no. Every MA has something and it is up to the individual what they take from it. What the superior man seeks is in himself; what the small man seeks is in others. - Confucius
jakmak52 Posted February 17, 2005 Posted February 17, 2005 If you are training for self-defense, it does matter. If that really isn't your main goal, it doesn't matter. For example, I wouldn't criticize you for playing basketball just because it isn't self-defense oriented (although I've seen some games that would make you think otherwise)... A problem arises when you are taking something less than practical for self-defense with the express purpose of self-defense. Is it my duty to warn these people what they do may be potentially dangerous and change their minds? Not really. I can advise them, but if they say "no", then there's not much I can do. It's their choice, after all. Absolutly, 100% correct! If you're taking an art simply for the enjoyment..then it makes no difference what you take as long as you enjoy it. I'll second that notion Best regards,Jack Makinson
