Yes. You use pads to protect your head, hands, and feet, as well as a mouthguard to protect your teeth. There are several types of sparring that I've heard of such as full contact or point sparring.

 

You generally use techniques on your partner or the person you are sparring to score points. It is like fighting.

 

Sorry I can't explain any further, but as a yellow belt, I still have not learned how to spar.

I've sparred twice in my style... and lord knows how many times in a nonMA format. Sparring is fighting, but controlled fighting. Your goal is not subdue your opponent (a friend most likely) but to work on technique.

 

Tournament sparring is ususally point based and the opponents have a certain level of control as to not injure their counterpart.

Strength is no match for skill
