aes Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 Does anyone have a good place with a store front in the Mississauaga, Hamilton/Burlington area of southern Ontario to get a Gi and MA equipment from? I don't really want to go all the way into Toronto to shop and I am told there is a good place in Hamilton but I don't know it's name. My daughter needs a heavy weight Gi and I would like to go somewhere where she can try it on before we buy rather than ordering via our dojo sight unseen. 43 Years oldBlue Belt (7th Kyu) Shorin-ryuRoberts Karate
Chado Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 Hi there! There is one store in the Hamilton area, it's on Centenial Parkway just off the QEW. The only thing is that their prices are right out of the century catalogue. When I have my sensei order the equipment from them using his discount, even with him making some money, the prices are alot cheaper. Also if your looking for an expensive Gi (Tokaido/Kime/Shureido) I'd recommend getting it online as long as you know her size. And on one other note I have a Budo World gi...which I believe there office is in Toronto, but maybe they ship? and it's not to bad. I guess it just depends on what you are looking for. The store that I mentioned is called Kyoshi Martial Arts supply. The address is 45 Goderich Rd. Unit 6. They are actually hosting a tournament at the Hamilton Convention Center on Sunday...(which I will be at !) Hope this was helpful! Chad
aes Posted February 21, 2005 Author Posted February 21, 2005 Thanks for the info Chado. We did some calling around and came up with Kyoshi, but they did not seem to be open on Saturday, so have not been able to get in there yet. Budo World is where our dojo seems to get stuff from. Might try there. My Gi came from Kamakazi, but for my Daughter I wanted to be able to try it on before we buy. Good lunck next Sunday at the tourney. I will be at an awards banquet next Sunday receiving some awards for my placing in tournaments last year. 43 Years oldBlue Belt (7th Kyu) Shorin-ryuRoberts Karate
Chado Posted February 21, 2005 Posted February 21, 2005 Oh... I guess this might be redudant...but dont get budo world sparring equipment...it seems to be junk (sorry if anyone likes it who reads this). It falls apart really easy. And there low end gi's I can make no comment on. I simply like the 16oz gi. Congrats on the trophies, this tournament isn't looking to exciting for me because I dont think anyone else from my dojo is going to be able to make it But I'll try to hold down the fort for them lol. Regards, Chad
aes Posted February 22, 2005 Author Posted February 22, 2005 Thanks. A lot of our beginner equipment seems to be budo world these days. In fact my new punches are. I guess I will have to see how well they last. I have century cgear boot style kicks that seem to be falling apart awfully fast but I think that is because they were ordered too big for my small feet. That is part of the reason I want my daughter to try on the gi at a shop so we can be sure it is the right size and gives a little room for her to grow. She is 11 but is growing very fast. She will be taller then me very soon. 43 Years oldBlue Belt (7th Kyu) Shorin-ryuRoberts Karate
June1 Posted March 1, 2005 Posted March 1, 2005 LOL. My gi is from Budo World. Based on your comments about sparring gear, I just hope my dojo doesn't get the equipment from there, too! aes Posted March 1, 2005 Author Posted March 1, 2005 A number of Gi's are Budo world in our dojo. We have more than one in our dojo, ie rank gi, formal gi etc. I think it all depends on the weight of the Gi. I don't really like our rank gi's but it is not Budo world's fault that they were specified to be a poly-coton blend and are not heavy enough. 43 Years oldBlue Belt (7th Kyu) Shorin-ryuRoberts Karate

I mean, good do-gi is a pleasure to train in. Jussi HäkkinenOkinawan Shorin-Ryu Seibukan Karate-Do (Kyan Chotoku lineage)TurkuFinland
aes Posted March 2, 2005 Author Posted March 2, 2005 We are allowed traditional all white gis and rank gis (combos of coloured tops and black pants depending on rank). I am not familiar with do-gis. What exactly makes a do-gi a do-gi? 43 Years oldBlue Belt (7th Kyu) Shorin-ryuRoberts Karate
Jussi Häkkinen Posted March 2, 2005 Posted March 2, 2005 We are allowed traditional all white gis and rank gis (combos of coloured tops and black pants depending on rank). I find that interesting...especially since your signature refers to an Okinawan style. Only do-gi styles I've noticed worn by Okinawan martial artists are full white (most common), black jacket/white pants (common in kobudo) and all black (rarest, but frequently seen), and, most rare, black pants and white jacket. I've never heard of any style that would use other combinations. Hakama, of course, is occasionally used, but seldom in training. I am not familiar with do-gis. What exactly makes a do-gi a do-gi? Do-gi is a correct way of writing "gi". "Gi" itself just means "clothing" and is seldom used alone. From karate or judo uniform etc. you can use a term karate-gi, judo-gi or keiko-gi, or just term do-gi. Jussi HäkkinenOkinawan Shorin-Ryu Seibukan Karate-Do (Kyan Chotoku lineage)TurkuFinland
