Samurai Shotokan Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 I mean come on. I was watching the Last Samurai with my friends and when the ninja attack occured he said it was like the Emporer told the Chinese ninjas to get the Samurai!!!. when Tom was pretending to do forms my brother asked if i knew what he was doing and my other friend said its japanese but karate is chinese(ok to some degree he is right). I mean some people dont even know the difference between the Arts. When will people stop thinking Van Damme movies are the real thing as well. so feel free to tell some stories on how people are misinformed 28 movies, 50 years Godzilla is King of the Monsters"nothing like a good workout" Paul Pheonix
Dijita Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 I don't think some people need to know the Arts. To most people, movies are just a form of entertainment. You can't fault a person for not knowing if they've never been a part of it.
kataman Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 Welcome to hollywood! A lot of poeople belived we are in some kind of cult because of the different rituals of MA. Well we have to be patient with them. Last summer,it was the first time in 20 years that my mon came to see me in a demontration WOW WOW I don't train for belt color I train to survive on the street
ovine king Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 i don't think the general non-practicing people need/have to know anything about martial arts. what bugs me is when people who do practice don't know anything about the thing they do. what's worse is when they consistantly believe and regurgitate false information. earth is the asylum of the universe where the inmates have taken over.don't ask stupid questions and you won't get stupid answers.
SBN Doug Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 Just caight up to one of my co-workers from 7 yrs ago. (We just moved back to the area) He was telling me a funny story about his two boys when they were 7-ish. We were at a party with them, and my 7 yr old daughter was out in the yard playing tag with all the rest of the kids there. The next party, at a different house, his boys asked if my family was going to be there. He said yes, but why? Cause we're scared of her. Why in the world are you scared? Because she knows Karate!! We're scared of her dad too! Ahhhhh, my plans are comming together perfectly!!!!! Kuk Sool Won - 4th danEvil triumphs when good men do nothing.

You stole the words from my fingertips. Why is it that so many martial artists take everything their told as gospel, without even considering it's merits in fact? Matsumura Seito Shorin-Ryu

Bleeding Lion Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 Like it or not, MAs can be considered as a specialized field. What I mean is, it is not knowledge essential for everyday matters or even considered highly important within general culture. Many people here can say MAs are part of their sphere of competence to a some degree and knowledge-wise that is, but you cannot expect other people to have a decent understanding of it. I started GoJu recently, before that I didnt know much stuff about MAs in general, even less about the origins of the different styles. But how much do you know about computer science? do you know what RETE algorithm is without googling it? and what about cache-friendly code? See, comp sci is my field, but I cant expect you to know much about it. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence thus, is not an act, but a habit. --- Aristotle
Kieran-Lilith Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 It's annoying when people believe every last little thing they're told. Oh, and to whoever said karate was Chinese: It's not. Well, not my style anyway. Yes, a lot of techniques originated in China, but the Japanese did have some empty hand schools of their own. Besides the Okinawan, I mean. He who gains a victory over other men is strong; but he who gains a victory over himself is all powerful Lao-tsu
GhostlySykanRyu Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 Sure, the ignorance can be annoying...but the people who are ignorant seem happy enough with it. Less known about the MAs with the general public is fine with me...less chance of them falling into the wrong hands. To condemn the art of another is to condemn your own as well. We all have the same origin.
