soccerghost
i am interested in starting martial arts and i have done some research about styles. Now i have the problem of talking to my parents about it. My parents are very anti violence and my dad is worried that i will get enjoyment out of hurting other people. I want to do martial arts for fitness and competition. Any advice on how to talk to my parents about this? pineapple
Ask your parents to go with you to a TRADITIONAL martial arts school and let them bring up their concerns with the instructor there. The instructor will be able to answer their questions and help them overcome their fears. What works works

searcher
The martial arts are not about hurting other people. They are about learning to defend yourself while doing what it takes to survive. Sometime people get hurt, but people get hurt while playing sports or even while driving to work. You should slant your parents towards the spiritual side and towards the physical fitness aspect of the martial arts. Be calm with them and allow them to ask questions of your potential instructor. Be patient with your parents sometimes they need a little help before they will fully understand. "let those who shed blood with me be forever known as my brother." ramymensa
Try to take them to the dojo you have in mind .. good idea. Talk to them and express your POV. Try to have your "homework" done and you might even redirect them here. We'll take care of them World Shotokan Karate

krzychicano
Just be honest and upfront with them. I'm sure they will be okay with it. Let us know how it turns out.
