i have had this same discussion on another MA board.

if a dog attacks or charges you the best thing you can do is stand your ground and in a loud voice yell "NO!"

if the dog persists - pray to whatever god you believe in.

dogs are made to take down animals bigger than them, if they want you they will get you. none of this 'grab their front legs and spread them, it will break their shoulders' crap - my dog sleeps like that. any poking in the eyes will likey aggrivate the dog, if you offer an arm hoping to be able to hit with your other one you'll soon find one arm with alot less muscle and flesh.

a friend of mine has a 40lb lab mix. i play tug with her all the time and she pulls me off of his couch. i am 6'2" and 250lbs. now picture if the dog was seriously upset and intent on attacking me and i offer her my arm. that same tugging that pulls 250lbs off a couch would be on my arm, with teeth imbedded. not to mention the head shaking that dogs do when they attack.

Yes. Don't turn your back to him, and don't back off unless you are certain you can get to saftey before it gets to you. If there's no escape, see if there's a weapon such as a bar or wooden pole or anything you can use to keep the dog at a distance. If you are forced to defend against the dog, I'd say try not to get your hands near it. Kick as hard as you can to it's face and try to bust it's chops. Hopefully you're wearing shoes which will somewhat protect your foot from impacting with teeth, and it may be a little harder for the dog to grab or keep hold of your leg. On the other hand, if the dog damaged your leg to a point where you can't stand or run, then you're screwed. There probably is no good way to defend against a dog short of using a weapon. The best advice would be to beware of dog.

We already have this thread somewhere...

i just looked at that old thread - it never ceases to amaze me the amount of people that think an attacking dog is going to sit there and allow you to kick them or "drive their nose bone through their brain" LOL

if people spent half the time finding out how dogs REALLY attack that they do making up rediculous theories about how to fend off a dog attack they would realize how dumb they sound!

Depends on the dog. Sometimes is just good to stop and talk to it. I have a dog myself and I can see his "moods" :)

Although I was in a "fight" position with dogs over the years I talked on a warm tone or showed it I'm stronger and not afraid. It's a matter of luck too :D
