The biggest obstacle to learning Japanese by yourself is that you will not have a chance to speak it with others that understand what you are saying. My recommendation is to look up Japanese cultural organizations in your area and get in touch with a Japanese speaker (preferably a Japanese) and they can direct you towards better resources or even serve as a conversation partner. They usually appreciate people trying to learn the language.

As far as extra stuff or books, there's plenty of things online you can find. Just type in "Japanese" and "grammar" and "basic" to get you started.

shotokankid: if everyone in your immediate family speaks Japanese, what would happen if you just refused to speak English at home anymore?
