Straight Blast Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 BJJ is ALL techniques...and 'its all in the hips' <-Happy Gilmore! BJJ was created by the one Gracie who had weak bones and could easily get hurt, out of all....bizillions of them(joking). I always thought brute strength was the way to go for ground fighting...i was wrong when a blue belt in bjj that was 110lbs got me in a few submissions within a matter of time.
1kickKO Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 Technique does beat power...I didn't mean to say it's all about strength, what I mean is compared to jujitsu, you need more strength..it is "wrestling" where ya have to wrestle your opponent for control...but in jujitsu the moves focus more on fluidity, transitioning, and balance for moves. If you can put all these together, you'll be one heck of a ground fighter.
Gumbi Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 Wrestling techniques are often just as varied and technical as BJJ techniques- its the fighting philosophy that is different. The techniques are usually the same- put yourself in a position to use your larger muscles against his smaller ones (or a point where you're balanced and hes not). Now as far as the philosophy of it, the whole idea of giving way to a stronger force in BJJ doesnt work too well in wrestling. If someone is forcing themselves on top of me, it may be in my best interests to go to my back and look for a sweep or a submission. In wrestling this is not an option, so if someone is using power to force his way on top, you've got to use more to make sure he fails. That is also why a 10lb difference in wrestling is dramatically different than 10 lbs difference in BJJ.
dingyuan Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 BJJ = techniques For Wrestling strength does matter a lot. A smaller guy trained in BJJ can defeat a lot bigger guy than he is but I don't really think a smaller wrestler can defeat a bigger wrestler in a one on one wrestling match...at least not as easy as BJJ would.
mai tai Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 they are equally important factors and should be both worked on. ie 10 years ago i was wrestling with a guy who was an powerlifter. 450bench 600squat. wieght well over 220. me at the time 150 never lifted but good wrestler he was pushing into me and begging to be thrown. i set it up perfectly, hip to hip and way deep. he set his hips back, and hip upped me across the room. strenghth beat tech that time. the next day i started wieght training i now am 170 bench 315 squat 550 and have a 36inch vertical. we have some roiders in my school that are 260 lbs and i tap them 80 percent of the time. so tech can beat strength on another note even when i win i am still sore the next day.our best fighter is a 165 guy, i still hate the big guys and they seem to love the can opener
