Best Martial Art for a SuperHero?

Recommended Posts

A bit of an odd question, I'm interested in other opinions on this question as it affects a piece of fiction I'm writing...

... so, what martial art style, or combination of styles (no more than two) do you think would best suit a non-superpowered superhero? (and why...).

Currently: Kickboxing and variants.

Previously: Karate (Seido, Shotokan, Seidokan), Ju Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, Fencing.

I'm biased, but a CQC (Close Quarters Combat) AND a grappling art would be cool for a superhero.

It's more realistic in battle and is proven to be just as effective - from striking (boxing/Kung Fu style), ground fighting (Jiujitsu) to weapons disarmament etc. Although everything has their pros and cons, it's ideal pick up different arts to try and "fill in the gasps" so-to-speak. Personally, MA has taught me little in defense against guns, knifes etc. thus far - in that aspect CQC is much more effective for me.

Hope this helps! :D

CQC (Close Quarters Combat)

Isn't that used in the military, and didn't Snake from the game Metal Gear Solid 3 use it?

EDIT: Back on the topic.....I think any grappling art mixed with fighting arts along with a flashy style would be cool with a superhero.

A mix of grappling and striking, such as Muay Thai and BJJ or a Kung Fu style (my vote is for Wing Chun, but I'm biased!) mixed with BJJ.

A weapons art would also be good to have - something like Arnis or Krabi Krabong.

why don't you tell us a little bit about your story first.
An eccentric newspaper tycoon wants to create a real-life superhero, outwardly because of the impact exclusive stories could have on sales, but also because he is a kind of thrillseeker by proxy.

He secretly recruits a team of around half a dozen specialists (technologist, military advisor, police insider, etc... even a comic book artist) to realise his idea. The tycoon with this team plan the superhero and recruit an individual to play the hero ... although the backup that is poured into this one individual will of course make him seem more impressive than he actually is...

The first part of the novel will concern the gathering of the team, the selection and training of the superhero, and the reaction to the hero's initial crimefighting outings, the press and public response, etc.

In the second part, everything goes horribly wrong ... there's a few possibilities for how this will happen, some of which you can probably imagine ... and in the third part, we see how some parts of these problems are overcome, and one or two may become worse.

BTW, this will NOT be sci-fi, in the sense that everything should be possible by today's technology and biology.
