Gumbi
From what I understand, most Ju Jitsu schools outside of the Brazilian style do not have tournaments (or they have wierd ones in which submissions count as points, etc etc). Judo is pretty good if you'd prefer competing alot- I like the way they allow the repcharge so that if you go to a tournament, you're guarenteed at least 2 matches. TJS
Judo would be my next choice if there was not a bjj school nearby. Personally I think it's going to be hard to find a good non brazilian JJ school in the US. Edited February 4, 2005 by TJS
CQC
Jujitsu mainly focuses on manipulation of ones opponent in many different ways. In our Dojo we focus on striking, throws, joint locks, submission fighting etc. It's an extremely practical system as it focuses on many aspects of self-defense, not just grappling like BJJ, which makes it a more rounded martial art. If you are in it for self-defense, it's excellent - and you can successfully take down and opponent without seriously injuring them. It doesn't take a lot of time to get the basics down - just know that nothing comes easy. If you work hard and practice the techniques/stances at home, you'll learn a lot more quickly and things will definately come easier. As for Jiujitsu tournaments, I don't care for them. Most of them around here use an odd point system, and it mainly focuses on striking. If you do want something with tournaments etc, try judo as meantioned. Kung Fu tornaments are fun, but that's personal preference. Hope this helps! "Beware the fury of a patient man."- John Dryden
1kickKO
Sorry gumbi not to confront ya or anything but there are many different styles other than just BJJ, and they do have many many tournaments...anywho, the only thing that really made BJJ popular was Royce and Renzo in the UFC and Pride. That's about it...other than that all jujitsu is great, and to answer your question jujitsu is believed to date so far back that there are no written records of where it came from, but it is believe that the samurais used it. Jujitsu consists of mostly grappling (ground fighting) and throwing, sweeping, joint locks, chokes, and mounts. It's a great ground art and when you're ona 1-1 fight is great, but if there is more than 1 guy about to fight you, it might not be a good idea to hit the ground...ya might get jumped. I practice traditional jujitsu and we do all of the above and it teaches you self respect, and all the good stuff that comes with any martial art. Good luck in finding a school. Gumbi
Sorry gumbi not to confront ya or anything but there are many different styles other than just BJJ, and they do have many many tournaments I had mentioned that- there are other styles of Ju Jitsu, however, many of these schools acknowledge they dont train for competition and often dont compete. I have heard of other Ju Jitsu tournaments such as the ones I believe Remco Pardoel was a European Champion of, but they're much differently run than the other more popular ones....anywho, the only thing that really made BJJ popular was Royce and Renzo in the UFC and Pride. They ignited the spark- what made BJJ popular was its overwhelming success by many different practitioners
