Andy1979
Hi everyone, first time post here! Many apologies as I am sure this has been asked many times before. I am a regular competitor in kata tournaments and really want to learn a kata called Anan (NOT ananku). I do have an instructor who can teach me but he is unavailable for a good while. Does anyone know any free video downloads of the kata that are of good quality? Even better if there is a step by step guide - might be asking for too much though! Many thanks to you all Andy

senna_trem
So that is a Tang Soo Do kata? It seems a little some kung-fu-ish than I would have imagined. "I think therefore I am" Rene Descartes
searcher
Are talking about the Anan kata of Ryuei-ryu of Tsugero Sakumoto that he used to win the World Championships? If yes, then you might want to buy his video that shows the kata and teaches it. If you would like to see the kata before you learn it you might want to check out Wonder Okinawa. This sight has several videos of kata and one of them has Master Sakumoto performing Anan. Just to clarify, the Anan that is taught in Shito-ryu is the same kata. P.A.L
THE Ryuei-version of Anan is different from Shito-ryu and Shindo jinen ryu,"tommarker" post a link above which shows shindo jinen ryu version since konishi learnt this kata from Mabuni his version should be very close to shito ryu. the most elegent one belong to Ryuei-ryu, as "searcher" said before you can see his version in https://www.wonder-okinawa.jp under Ryuei-ryu katas just remember it's a short version some parts are deleted from middle section. and welcome to KF Edited January 28, 2005 by P.A.L
Shorin Ryuu
Just be forewarned when you check out the Wonder Okinawa site. Some of the kata I have seen have moves left out or odd camera angle switches that make it difficult to "learn" the kata from simply watching it. This was obviously done on purpose, and in some cases the videos even have "abbreviated version" or something on them. When performing for a large audience or people not privy to training in their style, Okinawan masters often change the kata slightly or a lot. Edit: Looks like P.A.L. beat me to it...So that is a Tang Soo Do kata? It seems a little some kung-fu-ish than I would have imagined. Most old Okinawan kata are when they are done properly. tommarker
I would agree the Sakumoto kata is amazing, but as you noted is a "digest" version of the form. For the record, we do NOT do Anan in TSD. I like the palm strikes though. I'm no longer posting here. Adios.
Vinson
Anan is one of my favourite kata. Here's a video clip of Sakumoto Sensei doing it: http://teacher.lskc.edu.hk/~t51wws/pub/video/anan.DAT I have the tape that shows the kata done from different angles. I also have a tournament tape that shows a slightly different version done by female world champion Wakai. If you're serious about learning the kata, I suggest that you buy the tape and the book by Sakumoto Sensei: http://www.karatedo.co.jp/index3.htm But of course, the best way is still learning from a qualified instructor. I hope this information helps. Edited March 8, 2005 by Vinson Hong Kong Kendokai3rd Dan
