I've been doing martial arts for a couple months now, but I"m just slightly confused about one thing. I know all the theory behind kihops, and how you're supposed to do them and why, so thats all good. But, I'm just not exactly sure what sound I"m supposed to be making. It's possible I"m over thinking it, but still heh.

So my question is, Can you guys describe the sound YOU make when you kihop?

Thanks :)

I'm guessing you mean the sound for Kia's used when executing a strike or block. The breath used to in the kia should come from deep within the abdomen. The purpose of the kia is to focus all of your physical and mental energy into the block or strike. The sound can be anything as long as it suits it purpose. I've heard people use ice, dice, die and even the word kia. Just let it come natural to you and you'll soon settle on something that works for you. :)

Everyone's kiai/kihap will be a little different, so don't worry so much about what it sounds like.

What's important is that it is serving its purpose, as said above.

It definitely should come from your low abdomen, so something to avoid is vocalizing it through your mouth or throat. it's hard to explain the difference, but you can definitely hear the difference.

I actually prefer it if it doesn't really sound like anything at all, more of a primal noise from within thing...

I actually know one master who's kihap I was able to feel in my chest, the way you feel the bass in your car when it's turned up too loud....

A Kiyap is a personal thing. It's going to be what it's going to be. You'll feel it when you are doing it correctly.

Ok Cool. I was more worried that there was some kind of outline as to how a kihop has to sound, but I guess not. As long as it fits the requirements in that it comes from your diaphragm etc etc, I guess it'll work :)

Thanks

Mine varies...it usually sounds like "hai" or "hut" (without the pronunciation of the "t").

To condemn the art of another is to condemn your own as well. We all have the same origin.
