Sphinx Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 I just found out that Matt damon used a mixture of boxing and Kali in the Bourne Identity. I was wondering what Kali is and whether there are kicks and grappling taught in the art??? Buy low, sell high, take your pills, tell your lies, fake your tan, wear a tie, go to the gym, you'll never die !!!
ZR440 Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 Kali, which is sometimes known as Escrima or Arnis, is a weapons-based Filipino MA. Sticks, and knives or daggers, are most common weapons used. Yes, there are low level kicks and some grappling incorporated depending what style you train in. Some styles will emphasize disarming the attacker, while another might trap or lock the attacker's weapon. Mine uses both. It's happy hour somewhere in the world.
SevenStar Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 When I trained kali, I was told that they aren't technically the same - it's territorial. stickfighting from the southern phillipines is kali. Northern is arnis. Central is escrima, and tends to have more of a spanish influence.
ZR440 Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 Correct, but generally speaking.... It's happy hour somewhere in the world.
Rukawa Posted January 27, 2005 Posted January 27, 2005 I trained Kali for some time, and the training mostly focused on stick fighting and trapping techniques. It's really quite enjoyable and you will learn some things that are not taught in most other martial arts. But I recommend you to supplement it with some other MA. You won't need rules where you're going, mate. You'll need asbestos underpants! 'Cause you're going downstairs, me old cocker! Ooh, the moans. Ooh, the screams. Ooh, the countless billions thrown naked into the pit!
krzychicano Posted January 27, 2005 Posted January 27, 2005 I was born in Cali does that count? What the superior man seeks is in himself; what the small man seeks is in others. - Confucius
