angus88 Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 our students test in front of a 25 member panel of instuctors, all black belts. 10 kata30 one steps(must know 60)30 self defense(must know 60)46 block46 strikes25 kicksSensei Rick - just curious because my terminology is a little different from yours maybe - but what exactly are "one-steps?"
bokendowanderer Posted January 28, 2006 Posted January 28, 2006 When I received my second dan in hapkido my instructor went into his office at the end of the class and came out with a certificate. He knew I was there before the class started. When I received my 5th dans in bokkendo and jukawusu from another instructor it was done the same way. After the class he just told me and gave me a certificate. The point is if your doing the deal and you deserve it you should get your rank and be allowed to move on.I have been tested under formal planned tests with formal certification ceremonies also. It is nice to be recougnized for hard work in front of others.
patusai Posted January 29, 2006 Posted January 29, 2006 Sometimes instructors make the test a lot more difficult than necessary. Rank is based on technique, understanding, performance, etc. You don't have to come back with broken fingers or large bruizes. Shodan test should be memorable and somewhat tough considering that once a person reaches near that point they should have the necessary skills and such to pass the test.
