Mtal Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 I was wondering. Ok a lot of us take martial arts for self defence. Well I am learning to always kind of disguise that I know something. Don't want the attacker to know anything, then bam, let him have it. Well, what I was wondering, what happens if one day, I come across someone who knows martial arts, and is confronting me one on one. Right now I am taking JKD and also Go Ju Ryu (my gym offers it, mind as well take advantage of it, great work out). I see guys from a lot of styles, looking very strong and powerful, it might be some dude taking karate, do some ju jitus guy who you dont want to get a hold of you, to boxers, etc......... So is there a style that works well against other styles. Maybe a better question is are there styles with a lot of self defence that would not work well against someone who has been studying a style for a while, well conditioned, etc....... Well this might be more of a fun type of question, I know we should not be looking for this, etc..... Jay Johnson

busling Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 Good idea Master Jules, the more you know about your enemy, the better your chance of victory. Train Hard --- http://www.combatcentres.com/
Master Jules Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 Precisely.......An example I gave a while back as to why thats helpful is this.....doing security one night, we had to escort a drunk guy out....he left no problem, but when we hit the sidewalk, he started screaming about how he was a 3rd degree in TKD, and he was gonna kick everybody's you-know-what....when I fought him, I had a pretty good idea that he was gonna be coming at me with kicks, and thats just what he did, so I was more than ready for him.......In your dojo, you only fight against people who train to fight the same way you do....when you run into a guy who trains a different way....dont let it be a surprise to you....learn about everything thats out there, so you can deal with it when you have too. ~Master Jules......aka "The Sandman""I may be a trained killer......but Im really a nice guy"
VinnieDaChin Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 Can't go wrong with the ol' MMA stuff i think.
Treebranch Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 No MMA teach you to ring fight. You can't give anything away, especially by going into a stance before you fight. Budo Taijutsu is all about the element of surprise. The goal is to defeat someone without looking Martial Arty. You don't want people to know what you know and you don't want to give it away ahead of time. You start bouncing around like a boxer and you kind of know what to expect. You get in the famous grapple position and you kind of know what to expect. If you put your hands up with the hey dude I don't want to fight you pose. You are ready to go and they don't know it. They attack, they fall, they can't get up and no one knows what happened. That's an ideal fight. I hope that helps. By the way I'm not trying to down play MMA. They can be very effective and are not to be taken lightly, but I can usually spot MMA practitioners from a mile away. That way I can avoid them altogether. roy291 Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 Learn to grapple, also learn how to handle yourself until the fight ends up on the ground. Take the other fighter out of his/her element. If the opposing fighter is also good on the ground, well then you may wanna try to stay away as much as possible. Almost every Fight that I have been in has gone to the ground, from there its a chess match the first person to make a mistake will lose. The ground is my ocean, I am a shark and you can't swim.
alevensalor Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 Master Jules has posted the ultimate answer to this question, I think. In order to be prepared for any encounter, you must be aware of all things around you not just in an individual way, but in a worldly way. It takes very little time to find the technique prevalence in any single martial art. If you do your homework for the sake of your own curiosity, and constantly seek knowledge in all things, you will be ready for anything regardless of the art you have chosen for yourself. ~A!
