I have asked this question before and have never got a quality answer. The question is why does Shotokan have 2 symobols.

1. The tiger is below a half moon.

2. The tiger is above the half moon.

Anyone have any idea of what the meaning is this is?

We never used those symbols so I'm actually clueless on that one. We did use the rising sun for our "JKA International" patches for a while and some AAKF patches with the Olympic Torch in it, but that's about all. I always thought the Tiger thing was more of an Americanized thing??? We never really related the Shotokan Tiger to anything and Nishiyama never discussed the matter either?

the tiger comes from the pine tree trail where Funakoshi wrote looked like a tigers tail.

Then when the book was translated they chose a symbol and it was the tiger for power. one punch one kill. But the half moon thorws me. espically why there is 2 versions.

I am not sure if this is relevant but I was reading on one site that their black belt certificates have a half moon or something of that nature and that one half is on the students certificate and the other half is maintained in a central registry and that the two symbols can be compared to tell if the certificate is fake or not.

Sorry, I don't know. I've seen the tiger symbol used, but not with the half-moon.

my patch is a tiger with an upheld front paw and a curled tail with a rising sun in the background with 9 rays.

If you look in the century catalogues you will see 3 shotokan patches.

1. is just black and gold with a tiger and the half moon above it. This is the more common patch.

2. Is a Tiger with the moon above it its Red I think

3. Is the Tiger with the moon below it and its Orange.

Those are the 2 I have questions about. WHY would the moon be on the bottom in that one patch. There has to be some reasons and its prob. pretty simple but I just don't know.
