Killer Miller Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 In the morning around the guys (good friends) Osu is ok for good morning - non martial arts usage I'm referring to here. But all Japanese (men only) will say it very quietly and never admit that the word exists unless you are one of the guys and know how to use the word with respect. I worked for a HUGE Japanese corporation for most of my career and asked many of them about the word - all claimed they never heard of the word. However, every day at the coffe machine they would say quietly say osu... After about two years being around the group they finally admitted the usage of the word - but cautioned me about the use around mixed company. Secondly, I asked Nishiyama-sensei a couple of times in the past about the usage of Osu. He said it was a college greeting amongst male college mates and also an old military greeting like saying "YES SIR." What the true history of the word is I'm not positive. I always failed history in school - not one of my favoriate subjects in school... But coming from someone whom trained under Funakoshi, I trusted his explanation. - Killer - Mizu No KokoroShodan - Nishiyama SenseiTable Tennis: http://www.jmblades.com/Auto Weblog: http://appliedauto.mypunbb.com/Auto Forum: http://appauto.wordpress.com/
senna_trem Posted February 11, 2005 Author Posted February 11, 2005 What the...? Are you serious? So we speak in slang all the time in the dojo? :0And here you thought there was discipline and respect! "I think therefore I am" Rene Descartes
Karateka Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 You should go to the website 24fightingchickens.com and see if he has his karate site still up. In there, he talks about how Ossu is a gutteral slang word used by jocks and that type of thing. Its very casual and not very respectful apparently. I think it was just one of those things that was just passed down and everyone was doing it so...who knows? "Never hit a man while he's down; kick him, its easier"Sensei Ron Bagley (My Sensei)
Killer Miller Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 These days it's pretty much just a Karate thing - with the exception of being at the coffe machine in the morning around the guys... 24 fighting chickens has some really good stuff. But some of their stuff is politically weighted. - Killer - Mizu No KokoroShodan - Nishiyama SenseiTable Tennis: http://www.jmblades.com/Auto Weblog: http://appliedauto.mypunbb.com/Auto Forum: http://appauto.wordpress.com/

yamesu Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 http://australiankyokushin.com/osu.shtml this is for all of you who still think the dojo term OSU, is the same as the 'coffeemachine' osu............... Killer Miller Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 I never said they were the same, I just cited two example of the usage of the word - that all... - Killer -http://australiankyokushin.com/osu.shtml this is for all of you who still think the dojo term OSU, is the same as the 'coffeemachine' osu............... senna_trem Posted February 13, 2005 Author Posted February 13, 2005 A very helpful Aussie website! "I think therefore I am" Rene Descartes
yamesu Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 an excellent website. i had absolutely nothing to do with it, but i use it as a reference to others often, as most of the info is pretty sound. hehehe...........and if your not already a black belt, theres a funky section where you can see what your name will look like on your belt. OSU. "We did not inherit this earth from our parents. We are borrowing it from our children."
Omega14 Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 Please do not continue the use Osu in the dojo. Most people are not using it properly. To be honest, I find the term to quite rude (so do most Japanese). It is really a term that used by young children and young males.
