the website looks nice but it cannot tell you if the school is good or bad

go there and tell them you want to try them for a couple of weeks with no commitment first. then make sure you know every single detail about the style, the school, the tuition, the programs in detail.

they tend to not tell you anything about the tuition sometimes, and when you ask they say "we're getting way ahead of ourselves" but if u dont want surprises make sure you know everything in details.

i noticed that there's only 5 or 6 peeps in their classes (looking at the pictures) hmm?

good luck

it looks good and the small class usually means tough which is always good + you may get more time with the master.

I've heard mixed opinions about sifu henery poo yee.My ex- sifu told me he met him and he was very skilled, but I heard also form a friend who practices SPM aswell that he changed the system alot .If I was you before you join check other SPM syles and compare that do what this sifu is doing and if you can try to read up about this style and know as much as you can before making a decisiion.

Good advice everybody, keep it coming if you have anymore comments or suggestions. As for stonecrushers comment,I think that this is the only SPM school in my city being that most chinese martial arts schools in my area are mostly Northern Shaolin, Wing Chun, or Tai Chi.There are more chinese styles but they are harder to find. Also I've heard that SPM shares some similarities with Tai Chi and Wing Chun, any comments on that? And one more thing what weapons does SPM teach for the most part?

My friend who practices Jook Lum SPM comes from a different linage then sifu Henry Poo Yee.If you lIke I could pass on your email to him and he could tell you alot about this style.I have only limit information. He trains in New Jersey. There is no SPM sifu in NJ ,but his sifu comes every couple of months to train them very hard and check on their progress. If you could get a few people together who like to study SPM.Im sure he would come down and train you guys.My friend is making very good progress in the system. In this style you need a training partner. There are many drills that are practiced with a partner..Anyway,if your very interested in SPM would I would check out my friends sifu. He's from Chicago. He has excellent skills. Good luck..

yeah sure pass on the e-mail to see his opinion, but I wouldn't try to get him over here being that it's hard for me to get people to actually do this. And the people I know that do want to train in martial arts already go to my karate dojo.

And for mantis I guess the reason there isn't a branch where you live is maybe the lineage, but I don't think this guy is a fake. Before he remodeled his website the picture he had on the top was of him on the cover of inside kung u magazine

and like I asked earlier I've heard that SPM shares some similarities with Tai Chi and Wing Chun, any comments on that? And one more thing what weapons does SPM teach for the most part?

wing chun and praying mantis share a lot of similarities in their use of body structure and in the way they treat footwork. Both emphasis forearm/bridge arm work and especially shirt bridge work. Both have a strong element of closing/trapping/control. Both are very direct, or at least they should be direct, in application.

one way of looking at tai chi, wing chun and mantis is to put them in a line with wing chun on one end and tai chi on the other end forming a sort of scale.

mantis, depending on your teacher would be close to wing chun than to tai chi but depending on your wing chun teacher, the distance between wing chun and tai chi might not be that big.

yes SPM is similar to wing chun inmany ways.its a short in-fighting system that uses short power(ging)The hand techniques are similar. But both have a different flavor.SPM and WCK have similar weapons like the long pole and short knife. Both systems have sensitivity training.Thats about all I can tell you about it.By the way what is your email??I'll forward it to my friend.you can PM it to me if you like..
