Kicks
You got some good advice and lots of support from the folks here. But guess what...if any of us here were testing for our next grade we would all be nervous too. Most of that pressure would be coming from within, the desire to do good, and not as much from our judges and peers. The Martial Arts is supposed to teach you how to deal with pressure. I think that's why we have formal test (gradings) in front of judges and an audience. You can always try that old trick; when you get in front of the judges just imagine that you're in your underwear. Is that how it goes? when you create the world's largest trailer park, you're going to have tornadoes

I think that's why we have formal test (gradings) in front of judges and an audience.Aside from the "imagine they're in their underwear" advice, does anyone have any other suggestions to deal with the nerves? I'm also testing for First Degree in a few months, and I'm a bit luckier than mskickerusa in that I've seen several BB tests and know what to expect. My greatest concern, however, is that my nerves will work against me and I'll make dumb mistakes that I usually wouldn't make.
searcher
Try meditating before hand. Go through a mock-up of the test on your own or with some of the others who will also be testing. Prepare yourself physically for the rigors of the test. Excellent physical fitness tends to over-ride the nerves. "let those who shed blood with me be forever known as my brother." Don't worry, you will make mistakes, especially after you are fatigued. Its how you recover from those mistakes that make the difference. The surprises are just that. Enjoy the moment. I had to lose my mind to come to my senses.

battousai16
i think it'd be cool if the surprise was that the test was actually pizza and a nap... that's what i'm gunning for for my next black belt test... fangshi
Best of luck on your test. Nerves are normal but just relax and focus . You'll do great. We are not so much individual beings as individual points of perception within one immense being.
