Taku-Shimazu
I think they are cool but i would put them in the 'Female' weapons category. Am I wrong? (I do not mean to offend if i am wrong) The cool summer breeze passes me by.
isshinryu5toforever
I wouldn't say that fans are Female weapons. I think the old idea of a woman sitting outside with an umbrela and a fan in the deep south is probably what created this. Fans were carried by many people in east asia however, and I would think that a martial artist would use anything that he or she would be carrying even if that happened to be a fan. scottnshelly
I wouldn't call it a 'Female weapon' either. The only time i've ever seen one in action was a form done by a male. What else would you consider a 'Female weapon'?
Taku-Shimazu
(To the guy who started the link) WEAPON: TESSEN DESCRIPTION: The Tessen was a folding fan with an iron frame and, when folded, was used to club an enemy. A few different variations were invented, including one with a sharp edge on the outside of the framework so that, instead of only being able to club a person, the ninja could cut as well. Is this what you were on about? Please visit https://www.entertheninja.com The cool summer breeze passes me by.
Kicks
The only problem with using a fan on the street is finding a place to plug it in. hee hee, sorry, I just couldn't resist. Actually, we use the fan in our hapkido training as a requirement for 4th dan. We learn 7 combinations using the fan incorporated with blocks, strikes, joint locks, sweeps, and kicks. I think I have a few techniques caught on video. I'll dig through my tapes this weekend and look for you if you'd like. when you create the world's largest trailer park, you're going to have tornadoes
1kickKO
Fighting fans re a great weapon, and if you are entering tournies, are very impressive to watch, and extremely graceful. They are most definitely not a "woman's weapon"...fighting fans are a common weapon in kung-fu, and are used by men, women, children, and people that get hot in the summer (haha I couldn't resist either kicks)...but back on topic, there are many fan katas that are very slow, and graceful...then there are those that are fast, and beutiful. It depends on what you like, check out some video clips of fan katas and you might see what I mean.

yamesu
if your starting out, a training or practice weapon is probably advisable, there normally pretty cheap as well "We did not inherit this earth from our parents.
