delli04 Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Has anyone out there ever heard of extending your pinky off of the rest your fingers when using a knife hand block or a shuto? I was teaching class tonight and one of my students said that a former teacher of his said that the pinky should be extended out, away from the rest of the hand, when using this block or strike. I don't know if I am being nieve but that sounds ridiculous to me. I've never heard that nor do I understand the principle behind it. Anyone out there have any input?
gheinisch Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Never heard of it here! Sounds like a good way to get your finger broke. Can't think of any reason to extend it out that way. "If your hand goes forth withhold your temper""If your temper goes forth withold your hand"-Gichin Funakoshi
Red J Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Maybe that's the fancy way to do it. Never heard of it. I had to lose my mind to come to my senses.
ncole_91 Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 The only thing i was taught, was to bend yout thumb a little bit. Nothing abotu a pinky.

Shorinryu Sensei Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Never heard of it here! Sounds like a good way to get your finger broke. Can't think of any reason to extend it out that way. Agreed. With the block, the fingers need to be together to support and strengthen one another. alone, it can get broken. same wit hthe strike actually, but a different application of course. But then again...maybe in certain circles, having the pinky extended might be proper...such as striking the neck while sipping tea. ShotokanKid Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Never heard of it, like everyone says, it's a great way to break your pinky "What we do in life, echoes in eternity.""We must all fear evil men.
