Jordan H Posted January 17, 2005 Posted January 17, 2005 Hello, I took kung fu at a local school about four years ago, I have decided to get back into practicing martial arts. I want to finish my senior year of highschool and am looking for a good kung fu coarse book series. If someone could post a reply back and let me know details on an experienced series, I would be most gratefull. -Thank You-
aes Posted January 17, 2005 Posted January 17, 2005 Well I personally don't think you can effectively learn MA from a book or series of books. Learning MA is an interactive thing. You can go through the motions of techniques and Kata but until a Master has looked at the way you are doing it and works with you to fix any problems, it is only half of the MA. SloMo Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 I wouldn't either. Especially without some reasoning behind it. I do agree though that you really need to get back into class. Each style has nuances that can only be learned from an instructor. Now, books are great for expanding things you already know and for getting new ideas. They are also good for finding things like new ways of training and such. TKD WTF/ITF 2nd Dan"A Black Belt Is A White Belt That Never Quit"
VinnieDaChin Posted January 21, 2005 Posted January 21, 2005 im sure theres some kung fu out there somewhere that might work. but ive never come across a kung fu that id call effective.
senna_trem Posted January 24, 2005 Posted January 24, 2005 Effective as defined as what? Street effective? Them is fightin words Vinnie. "I think therefore I am" Rene Descartes
VinnieDaChin Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 effective as in can beat anyone who has the first clue what theyre doing, or better yet, against someone with equal training time in say, boxing or something.
gheinisch Posted January 28, 2005 Posted January 28, 2005 Let's please try to keep this on topic and try and help. Style bashing is not allowed on this site. Everyone has their preference and likes and dislikes but lets keep this civil. Like a baby you need the supervision of you parents to start in live, well the same rules apply in MA with you sensei. I don't train for belt color I train to survive on the street
krzychicano Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 I personally feel that you are setting yourself up for failure if you want to use a series of books to learn MA. If you are really serious I would look into a school near you. What the superior man seeks is in himself; what the small man seeks is in others. - Confucius
1kickKO Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 I would look into a real instrucotr, as there will be many flaws in your techniques if you try and learn from a book..but if you insist on learning from a book, at least get a video..but if you can find an instructor, get one;)
