Tonfa

Recommended Posts

Are Tonfa the most suitable weapon for 2005?

Legal

Low risk of injury to self

Low risk of severe damage to opponent

Low risk but maximum effect

They are all the things you said. The problem is carrying them around. Even cops only have room on their belt for one. I think it's been discussed already and I have to agree that the cane is probably the best in terms of practicality and it's a bit more verstile and every bit as effective as a tonfa.

Don't get me wrong, I love the tonfa. I just don't expect to see people walking down the street with them. Not the "normal" people anyway! :brow:

I didn't know there was a contest? Are there going to be any posters showing various style of tonfa's..possibly held by bikini-clad cuties? :D

Legal

Well...yes, they are legal...until you hit somebody with it that is. Then it's assualt with a deadly weapon.

Low risk of injury to self

This is true pretty much.

Low risk of severe damage to opponent

I think your training and MY training are different. The tonfa, like other martial arts weapons, can be devastating if used properly.

Low risk but maximum effect

Low risk? In what way? As Sauzin accurately pointed out, the tonfa aren't really something you'd walk down the street with, but the cane could be, and IMHO..the cane is a much more versatile and practical weapon for a beginner, or advanced practioneer.

Thank-you Shorinryu Sensie, I missed that part. In fact, as with such weapons as staffs and even the cane it depends on how you use them. I assure you one good swing to the head and you will drop most people. The risk of death in such a case is actually pretty high. And the attacks that can be made to the ribs, torso, apendages, and collar bones are best described as "severe". I'm sure a jury would agree.

Of course the tonfa has a lot of grappling and submission techniqes that can be used. Still I think the cane has the upper hand even in this area.

ive had tonfas ever since i was a little weenis i find and easy way to carry them in to put the ends in your pockets then have them go up to the back of your shoulders and put the handles under your armpits then just wear a jacket over them so theyre invisible. i used to walk around with them all day like that.

too sweet

Uhhhh...I'll withhold comment on this one.

And what is "sweet" fighting? Attacking and defending with candy canes or something?

Ok, about the "Low risk to your opponent" part, what i meant was during sparring like the small knocks you get sometimes. if you were using blades of any kind you could easily gash into your sparring partner.

but i do understand why you all thought i didn't know what i was on about.

-Shinryu Sensei-

When you said "Low risk, in what way" (refering to when i said "Low risk with maximum effect")

What i meant was using them as karate enhancers, like for blocking and punching with. I do use them as they are intended with tonfa techniques as with every weapon but they were originally designed for use with karate without adapting karate techniques.

But anoather perception of what i meant was, They have low risk to self low legal interest if unused and yet at anytime you could just, with one rotation knock someone dead, if needed (Which would almost never be neccessary) but there if you need it.
