kicker Posted January 21, 2002 Posted January 21, 2002 well theres a strike going on that the teachers want more money so there going on strike and they say this might last quite long and is only in catholic schools I believe and well I was wondering what you think about this cause doctors nurses and some other people got a rase over 10% and teachers only got 4% do you think this is fair?? and comments?? when you do your best it`s going to show. SaiFightsMS Posted January 22, 2002 Posted January 22, 2002 I think it is an unfortunate fact of life that many school systems turn out students woefully short of basic knowledge. Retention of "good" teachers is a big problem. Pay is a part of that problem and yes a big part. Other things such as benefits and working conditions also play a role. There are some areas that unless public education is improved will no longer be able to produce new nurses and medical professionals.
ZR440 Posted January 23, 2002 Posted January 23, 2002 I know this won't make some happy, but the teachers should only get raises when they can prove the kids are getting smarter. Here in Northern Michigan some school districts are getting new schools (from voter approved tax increases) and having all the latest technology but still can't improve test scores or even balance thier own budgets. If they had jobs in any other sector of the working world most would have been fired long ago (if it weren't for the teachers union). I, as a taxpayer, am sick of hearing how they need more money. Quit buying so many damn computers and give the kids a pencil and paper! Analytical thinking is a thing of the past. I have close friends that are teachers and none agree with me. Am I that far off base? Am I extremist, or just telling the hurtful truth? It's happy hour somewhere in the world.
SaiFightsMS Posted January 23, 2002 Posted January 23, 2002 Heck many kids getting out of schools now can't even read. And young people working in stores can't count well enough to make chanage. Maybe there needs to be a better way to increase discipline in schools so that those who want to learn can. So much of the time a teacher is limited to what can be done with students who misbehave, disrupt or don't do the work.
kicker Posted January 23, 2002 Author Posted January 23, 2002 yes I do agree with that but one problem is that some people go to school and they don't care they fail anyway those people should be sent to a certain kind of school if they don't want to learn when you do your best it`s going to show. ZR440 Posted January 24, 2002 Posted January 24, 2002 I heard there is some group in Canada that wants the term "dropout" banned from use. Some people have too much time on their hands. I have a substitute for dropout...it's "QUITTER". It's happy hour somewhere in the world.
kicker Posted January 24, 2002 Author Posted January 24, 2002 well thats right Also people that dropout are just to lazy to stay in the school and then they complain about having a crappy job or even that they can't get one well it's there fault. when you do your best it`s going to show. Ryukyu1 Posted March 13, 2002 Posted March 13, 2002 Well the teachers are going on strike here in Ireland now also for more money. I think there should be more money available for teachers, perhaps it would encourasge more smarter individuals to go into the profession. I saw an interesting protest here yesterday...pupils had walked out of several local schools in protest against their treatment from teachers, quality of supervision and teaching!!
